This is the answer guide to Mock Exam 10, the last of our ten free sets. If you have not sat it yet, sit it first, under real conditions - 60 minutes, headphones, nothing else open - because everything below gives it away.

Set 10 is the final rehearsal, the one to sit the week before the real test. It mixes every setting the exam uses - the workplace, shops, trains and buses, the clinic, city hall and friends - and it is pitched at the top of A2. The listening clips are full of plans that change and numbers that get corrected, and the reading texts are the densest of the ten. If you want to work through the others too, here are all ten mock exams.

Script and Vocabulary (questions 1โ€“12)

Question 1

  1. ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡
  2. ใปใ‘ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†
  3. ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚“ใฒใ‚‡ใ†

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚“ใฒใ‚‡ใ†

ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚“ใฒใ‚‡ใ† (medical questionnaire) is the form you fill in at a clinic before seeing the doctor, listing your name and how you feel. ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡ (receipt) is a paper you are given after paying, not one you write on, and ใปใ‘ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (health insurance card) is a card you show, not a form you fill in. At almost every Japanese clinic the receptionist hands you a ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚“ใฒใ‚‡ใ† on a clipboard with the words ใ€Œใ“ใกใ‚‰ใซใ”่จ˜ๅ…ฅใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€. Learn to recognise all three words together: you show the ใปใ‘ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†, fill in the ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚“ใฒใ‚‡ใ†, and are handed the ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡ when you pay.

Question 2

ๅบ—ใง่ฒทใ„็‰ฉใ‚’ใ™ใ‚‹ใจใ€ใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆใŒใŸใพใ‚‹ใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰ใงใ™ใ€‚ใŸใพใฃใŸใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆใฏใ€ๆฌกใฎ่ฒทใ„็‰ฉใงไฝฟใˆใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰
  2. ใ‚ฏใƒฌใ‚ธใƒƒใƒˆใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰
  3. ICใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰

Answer: 1 โ€” ใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰

A card that collects points when you shop, which you can use on your next purchase, is a ใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰. A ใ‚ฏใƒฌใ‚ธใƒƒใƒˆใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰ pays now and is billed later, and an ICใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰ is a prepaid card for trains and buses. At almost every till you will hear ใ€Œใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰ใฏใŠๆŒใกใงใ™ใ‹ใ€ (do you have a point card?). ใ„ใ„ใˆ is a fine answer.

Question 3

  1. ใปใ‘ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†
  2. ใ–ใ„ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰
  3. ใ‚ใ‚“ใใ‚‡ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ–ใ„ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰

The ใ–ใ„ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ‚ซใƒผใƒ‰ (residence card) must be carried at all times by foreign residents and shows the visa status. ใปใ‘ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (health insurance card) does not show visa information, and ใ‚ใ‚“ใใ‚‡ใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (licence, such as a driving licence) is only for people who have one. Notice the grammar ๆŒใฃใฆใ„ใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚‰ใชใ„ - โ€œmust be carryingโ€. That obligation is what rules out the other two: nobody is required by law to carry a driving licence unless they are driving.

Question 4

ใ‹ใœใŒใชใ‹ใชใ‹๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใฎใงใ€ใ‚‚ใ†ไธ€ๅบฆใณใ‚‡ใ†ใ„ใ‚“ใธ่กŒใใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

  1. ใ“ใ‚ใ‚Œใชใ„
  2. ใชใŠใ‚‰ใชใ„
  3. ใŠใ‚ใ‚‰ใชใ„

Answer: 2 โ€” ใชใŠใ‚‰ใชใ„

ใชใŠใ‚‰ใชใ„ (does not get better) is what an illness does: ใ‹ใœใŒใชใŠใ‚‹ means โ€œa cold clears upโ€. ใ“ใ‚ใ‚Œใชใ„ (does not break) is for machines and objects, and ใŠใ‚ใ‚‰ใชใ„ (does not finish) is for events and work, not illnesses. ใชใ‹ใชใ‹ + negative means โ€œjust wonโ€™t โ€ฆโ€ or โ€œnot easilyโ€. It is a common pattern on the test and it nearly always pairs with a ใชใ„ form.

Question 5

ใ‹ใ„ใŽใฎใ—ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใฏใ‚ใ—ใŸไฝฟใ„ใพใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ไปŠๆ—ฅไธญใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒผใ—ใฆใŠใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใชใ‹ใชใ‹
  2. ใกใฃใจใ‚‚
  3. ใ‹ใชใ‚‰ใš

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‹ใชใ‚‰ใš

ใ‹ใชใ‚‰ใš (without fail) fits a request to finish the copying today. ใชใ‹ใชใ‹ and ใกใฃใจใ‚‚ (not at all) are both used with a negative verb, and ใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒผใ—ใฆใŠใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ is positive, so neither fits. This is a grammar trap disguised as a vocabulary question: two of the three adverbs need a negative after them. ไปŠๆ—ฅไธญใซ (ใใ‚‡ใ†ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใซ) means โ€œby the end of todayโ€.

Question 6

ใ“ใฎ้“ใฏใ›ใพใใฆ่ปŠใŒๅคšใ„ใฎใงใ€่‡ช่ปข่ปŠใง้€šใ‚‹ใฎใฏ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใงใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใ‚ใถใชใ„
  2. ใ†ใ‚‹ใ•ใ„
  3. ใ„ใใŒใ—ใ„

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‚ใถใชใ„

ใ‚ใถใชใ„ (dangerous) describes riding a bicycle on a narrow road with a lot of cars. ใ†ใ‚‹ใ•ใ„ (noisy) describes a sound, not the act of riding, and ใ„ใใŒใ—ใ„ (busy) describes a person, not a road. Read what the adjective is describing: ่‡ช่ปข่ปŠใง้€šใ‚‹ใฎใฏ - โ€œriding through by bicycleโ€. Only ใ‚ใถใชใ„ can describe an action like that.

Question 7

ใ€Œๅพ…ๅˆๅฎคใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใพใกใ‚ใ„ใ—ใค
  2. ใพใกใ”ใ†ใ—ใค
  3. ใพใกใ‚ใ„ใ˜ใค

Answer: 1 โ€” ใพใกใ‚ใ„ใ—ใค

ๅพ…ๅˆๅฎค is read ใพใกใ‚ใ„ใ—ใค (waiting room). ใพใกใ”ใ†ใ—ใค uses ใ”ใ†, a reading of ๅˆ that belongs to other words, and ใพใกใ‚ใ„ใ˜ใค wrongly voices the ใ—ใค of ๅฎค. You will meet ๅพ…ๅˆๅฎค at clinics, stations and city hall. It is built from ๅพ…ใค (to wait), ๅˆใ† and ๅฎค (room), and each part keeps its plain sound.

Question 8

ใ€Œๅธ‚ๅฝนๆ‰€ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ—ใ‚„ใใ˜ใ‚‡
  2. ใ—ใˆใใ—ใ‚‡
  3. ใ—ใ‚„ใใ—ใ‚‡

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ—ใ‚„ใใ—ใ‚‡

ๅธ‚ๅฝนๆ‰€ is read ใ—ใ‚„ใใ—ใ‚‡ (city hall). ใ—ใ‚„ใใ˜ใ‚‡ wrongly voices the ใ—ใ‚‡, and ใ—ใˆใใ—ใ‚‡ uses ใˆใ, a different reading of ๅฝน that is not used in this word. The ๆ‰€ in ๅธ‚ๅฝนๆ‰€ stays ใ—ใ‚‡. Compare ๅฐๆ‰€ (ใ ใ„ใฉใ“ใ‚), where it changes - this is why it pays to learn whole words rather than single kanji.

Question 9

ใ€Œๆฎ‹ๆฅญใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ•ใ‚“ใŽใ‚‡ใ†
  2. ใ–ใ‚“ใŽใ‚‡ใ†
  3. ใ–ใ‚“ใ”ใ†

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ–ใ‚“ใŽใ‚‡ใ†

ๆฎ‹ๆฅญ is read ใ–ใ‚“ใŽใ‚‡ใ† (overtime work). ใ•ใ‚“ใŽใ‚‡ใ† is a different word (็”ฃๆฅญ, industry), and ใ–ใ‚“ใ”ใ† has the wrong second half - ๆฅญ is ใŽใ‚‡ใ†. ใ•ใ‚“ใŽใ‚‡ใ† is the cruellest distractor here, because it is a real word. A voiced ใ– at the start is the whole difference.

Question 10

ใใฃใทใ‚’่ฒทใ†ใŠ้‡‘ใŒ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใฎใงใ€ATMใงใŠใ‚ใ—ใฆใใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ๅคšใ„
  2. ๅฎ‰ใ„
  3. ่ถณใ‚Šใชใ„

Answer: 3 โ€” ่ถณใ‚Šใชใ„

่ถณใ‚Šใชใ„ (ใŸใ‚Šใชใ„, not enough) explains why you need to take money out of the ATM. If the money were ๅคšใ„ (ใŠใŠใ„, a lot) you would not need the ATM, and ๅฎ‰ใ„ (ใ‚„ใ™ใ„, cheap) describes prices, not the money you have. ใŠ้‡‘ใ‚’ใŠใ‚ใ™ means โ€œto withdraw moneyโ€. Read the second half of the sentence first - it tells you what the first half must say.

Question 11

ๆฅ้€ฑใ‹ใ‚‰ไป•ไบ‹ใฎๆ™‚้–“ใŒ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใฎใงใ€ๆœ7ๆ™‚ใซๆฅใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ๅง‹ใพใ‚‹
  2. ๅค‰ใ‚ใ‚‹
  3. ๆญขใพใ‚‹

Answer: 2 โ€” ๅค‰ใ‚ใ‚‹

ๅค‰ใ‚ใ‚‹ (ใ‹ใ‚ใ‚‹, to change) explains why you must come at a new time from next week. ๅง‹ใพใ‚‹ (ใฏใ˜ใพใ‚‹, to start) and ๆญขใพใ‚‹ (ใจใพใ‚‹, to stop) do not explain a new arrival time - working hours do not โ€œstartโ€ or โ€œstopโ€ from next week. ๅค‰ใ‚ใ‚‹ (to change, intransitive) and ๅค‰ใˆใ‚‹ (to change something, transitive) both appear on the test. Here the hours themselves change, so it is ๆ™‚้–“ใŒๅค‰ใ‚ใ‚‹.

Question 12

ใพใฉใใกใงๅๅ‰ใ‚’๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใพใงใ€ใ„ใ™ใซๅบงใฃใฆใŠๅพ…ใกใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ๅ‘ผใฐใ‚Œใ‚‹
  2. ่žใ“ใˆใ‚‹
  3. ๆ›ธใ

Answer: 1 โ€” ๅ‘ผใฐใ‚Œใ‚‹

ๅ‘ผใฐใ‚Œใ‚‹ (ใ‚ˆใฐใ‚Œใ‚‹, to be called) is the passive form: you wait until your name is called. ่žใ“ใˆใ‚‹ (ใใ“ใˆใ‚‹, can be heard) cannot take ๅๅ‰ใ‚’, and ๆ›ธใ (ใ‹ใ, to write) makes no sense - you would not sit and wait until you write your name. ใŠๅๅ‰ใ‚’ใŠๅ‘ผใณใ™ใ‚‹ใพใง (until we call your name) is what the counter staff will say. The passive ๅ‘ผใฐใ‚Œใ‚‹ is the same idea from your side.

  2. ๆฅใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™
  3. ๆฅใฆใฏใ„ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“

Answer: 2 โ€” ๆฅใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™

B starts with ใ„ใ„ใˆ, so the answer is โ€œyou do not have to comeโ€: ๆฅใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™. ๆฅใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ (you must come) contradicts ใ„ใ„ใˆ, and ๆฅใฆใฏใ„ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ (you must not come) is too strong - a doctor would not forbid a patient to come. Pair the forms: ใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ (must) is answered โ€œnoโ€ with ใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ (need not). That pair turns up again and again on the test.

Answer: 1 โ€” ็€ใฆใฟใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใ‹

็€ใฆใฟใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใ‹ (may I try it on?) is answered by the assistant pointing to the fitting room. ็€ใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ‹ (have you ever worn it?) and ็€ใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใ‹ (may I not wear it?) do not lead to โ€œthis way to the roomโ€. ใ€œใฆใฟใ‚‹ means โ€œtry doingโ€, and ใ€œใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใ‹ asks permission. Together they make the polite fitting-room request you will use in every clothes shop.

Answer: 3 โ€” ใŠใใ‚Œใ‚„ใ™ใ„ใงใ™

ใŠใใ‚Œใ‚„ใ™ใ„ (tends to be late) describes what buses do on rainy days, which is why they should wait. ใŠใใ‚Œใชใ„ใใ†ใงใ™ (I hear it wonโ€™t be late) does not explain waiting longer, and ใ€œใŸใŒใ‚Šใพใ™ (wants to) is used for people, not buses. ใ€œใ‚„ใ™ใ„ after the verb stem means โ€œeasy toโ€ or โ€œtends toโ€: ใŠใใ‚Œใ‚„ใ™ใ„, ใ‚ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚„ใ™ใ„, ใ“ใ‚ใ‚Œใ‚„ใ™ใ„. ้›จใฎๆ—ฅใฏ sets up a general habit, which is exactly what ใ€œใ‚„ใ™ใ„ expresses.

Answer: 1 โ€” ใตใ‚‹ใใ†ใงใ™

ๅคฉๆฐ—ใ‚ˆใปใ†ใซใ‚ˆใ‚‹ใจ (according to the weather forecast) is reported information, so it needs hearsay ใใ†ใงใ™ after the plain form: ใตใ‚‹ใใ†ใงใ™. ใตใ‚Šใใ†ใงใ™ (looks like it will rain) is a guess from what you can see, which does not fit ใซใ‚ˆใ‚‹ใจ, and ใตใฃใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ (it may rain - permission) makes no sense. This is the hardest grammar item in the set. ใ€œใใ†ใงใ™ after a plain verb = โ€œI hear thatโ€; ใ€œใใ†ใงใ™ after the stem = โ€œit looks likeโ€. ใซใ‚ˆใ‚‹ใจ always goes with the first.

ใใฎใพใพใซใ—ใฆใŠใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ (please leave it as it is) fits โ€œwe are still using itโ€. ใ—ใพใฃใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ (please put it away) and ใ™ใฆใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ (please throw it away) both contradict ใพใ ไฝฟใ„ใพใ™. ใใฎใพใพ means โ€œas it isโ€. ใ€œใฆใŠใ here means leaving something in a state on purpose - a very common instruction at work.

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡ใ‚’ใŠใญใŒใ„ใ—ใพใ™

ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡ใ‚’ใŠใญใŒใ„ใ—ใพใ™ (a receipt, please) is how a customer asks for a receipt. ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡ใฏใ‘ใฃใ“ใ†ใงใ™ means โ€œI donโ€™t need a receiptโ€, the opposite of what you want, and ใ•ใ—ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™ (I will give you) is what staff would say, not the customer. ใ‘ใฃใ“ใ†ใงใ™ is a classic trap: it means โ€œno thank youโ€ when you are offered something. Use ใŠใญใŒใ„ใ—ใพใ™ when you want it.

ใŠ้›ป่ฉฑใŒ้ ใ„ใ‚ˆใ†ใชใ‚“ใงใ™ใŒ (the line seems faint) is the set phrase for โ€œI canโ€™t hear you wellโ€, which leads into asking for a louder voice. ใŠๅ…ˆใซใ—ใคใ‚Œใ„ใ—ใพใ™ is said when leaving work before others, and ใพใŸไปŠๅบฆใŠใญใŒใ„ใ—ใพใ™ (another time, please) ends a conversation instead of continuing it. ใŠ้›ป่ฉฑใŒ้ ใ„ literally means โ€œyour phone is far awayโ€. He took the day off because he suddenly got toothache (ๆญฏใŒใ„ใŸใใชใฃใŸ) and went to the dentist (ใฏใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒ). ใ˜ใคใฏ (actually, to tell the truth) is one of the strongest signals in JFT listening: what follows it is usually the answer.

M: How much are these shoes? / F: 4,800 yen. But thereโ€™s a sale today, so theyโ€™re 500 yen cheaper. / M: Then Iโ€™ll take them. And two pairs of these socks. / F: The socks are 300 yen a pair. / M: Hmm, actually, just one pair of socks is fine. / F: Certainly.

The shoes are 4,800 yen minus 500 yen, so 4,300 yen. He changes his mind (ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Š) from two pairs of socks to one, adding 300 yen: 4,600 yen. 4,900 yen counts two pairs of socks, and 5,100 yen forgets the sale. This is an announcement from city hall. The Friday advice desk for foreign residents is usually at window 5 on the second floor, but today the second floor is crowded, so it will be held in the meeting room on the third floor. Please take a number ticket at reception on the first floor, then go to the third floor.

Window 5 on the second floor is where the desk usually is (ใ„ใคใ‚‚ใฏ), but today it is in the third-floor meeting room (3้šŽใฎไผš่ญฐๅฎค). Reception on the first floor is only where you take a number ticket first. ใ„ใคใ‚‚ใฏโ€ฆใงใ™ใŒใ€ใใ‚‡ใ†ใฏโ€ฆ is the โ€œusually X, but today Yโ€ pattern. The answer is always on the ใใ‚‡ใ†ใฏ side.

The key is in the office cupboard (ใ˜ใ‚€ใ—ใ‚‡ใฎใŸใชใฎไธญ), not on Kimuraโ€™s desk - ๆœบใฎไธŠใงใฏใชใ means โ€œnot on the deskโ€. Nguyenโ€™s locker is never mentioned. The 8:20 bus arrives at 8:45, after work has started, and the 9:10 bus is later still. ้–“ใซๅˆใ† (ใพใซใ‚ใ†) means to be in time. The question gives a start time but asks for a departure time. On Saturdays only the 9:10 and 10:30 buses run. The 10:30 bus arrives at 10:55, before the 11:00 part-time shift starts, so it is the latest one that makes it. The 8:20 bus does not run on Saturdays, and the 9:10 bus is in time but is not the latest. A footnote marked โ€ป changes the whole table - always read the notes under a timetable.

  1. 3,500ๅ††

  3. 1,000ๅ††

Answer: 2 โ€” 2,500ๅ††

Course B is 3,500 yen a month, and first-timers get 1,000 yen off the first month, so it costs 2,500 yen. 3,500ๅ†† forgets the discount, and 1,000ๅ†† is only the discount itself. 1ใ‹ๆœˆ็›ฎ means the first month. Footnotes marked โ€ป often hold a discount. Apply it only where it says: ใฏใ˜ใ‚ใฆใฎไบบ, 1ใ‹ๆœˆ็›ฎ.

What to do with your score

Whatever you scored, the number is less useful than the questions behind it. Go back through every item you got wrong, and every one you guessed, and write down which trap caught you - a correction you missed, a footnote you skipped, a ใใ†ใงใ™ you misread. Our guide to reviewing a mock test shows how to turn that list into a plan, and how JFT-Basic scaled scoring works explains why a raw score out of 48 is only a rough guide to the 250-point scale.

This was the last of the ten sets. For one more full rehearsal, sit the free exam demo - the same four sections on one 60-minute clock - and then read what to do in the final two weeks before test day.

What to do with your mistakes

  1. Note which section cost you the most points โ€” the accuracy calculator shows it at a glance โ€” then read the guide for it: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening, Reading.
  2. Drill it with the free 24-question practice test, which explains every answer as you go.
  3. Only then sit the next full set โ€” a few days later, under real conditions. How to review a mock test goes into more detail.
