Sit Mock Exam 7 first, under real conditions - one 60-minute sitting, headphones on, nothing else open. Everything below gives the answers away, and a set you have already read the answers to cannot tell you anything about your level.

This set leans on hotels and accommodation: the front desk, room cleaning, guestsโ€™ requests, check-in and check-out times, lost property, the staff room and the laundry. About half the questions are set there; the rest are ordinary daily life and work. If you are heading for the accommodation field, the polite set phrases in the conversation section are worth learning by heart. The other sets are on the page with all ten mock exams.

Script and Vocabulary (questions 1โ€“12)

Question 1

ใŠใตใ‚ใ‚„ใ‚ทใƒฃใƒฏใƒผใฎใ‚ใจใงใ€ใฌใ‚ŒใŸใ‹ใ‚‰ใ ใ‚’ใตใใ‚‚ใฎใงใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใ›ใฃใ‘ใ‚“
  2. ใ‚ฟใ‚ชใƒซ
  3. ใ‚นใƒชใƒƒใƒ‘

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ‚ฟใ‚ชใƒซ

The description is โ€˜a thing you use to dry (ใตใ) your wet (ใฌใ‚ŒใŸ) body after a bath or showerโ€™, which is a ใ‚ฟใ‚ชใƒซ (towel). ใ›ใฃใ‘ใ‚“ (soap) is used in the bath, not after it, and ใ‚นใƒชใƒƒใƒ‘ (slippers) go on your feet. Bathroom words come up a lot in hotel work: ใ‚ฟใ‚ชใƒซ, ใ›ใฃใ‘ใ‚“, ใ‚ทใƒฃใƒณใƒ—ใƒผ, ใ‚นใƒชใƒƒใƒ‘, ใƒ‰ใƒฉใ‚คใƒคใƒผ. Learn them as a group.

Question 2

ใƒ›ใƒ†ใƒซใซ็€ใ„ใŸใŠใใ‚ƒใใ•ใ‚“ใŒใ€ๅๅ‰ใ‚’ๆ›ธใ„ใฆใ€ใธใ‚„ใฎใ‹ใŽใ‚’ใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใ†ๆ‰€ใงใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆ
  2. ใ—ใ‚‡ใใฉใ†
  3. ใ‚จใƒฌใƒ™ใƒผใ‚ฟใƒผ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆ

The place where guests who have arrived at a hotel write their name and receive the room key (ใ‹ใŽ) is the ใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆ (front desk). ใ—ใ‚‡ใใฉใ† (dining room) is where you eat, and an ใ‚จใƒฌใƒ™ใƒผใ‚ฟใƒผ (lift) takes you between floors - you get no key there. In a Japanese hotel the desk is almost always called ใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆ, not ใƒฌใ‚ปใƒ—ใ‚ทใƒงใƒณ. The word on the sign is the one guests will use.

Question 3

  1. ใ‚Œใ„ใžใ†ใ“
  2. ใ›ใ‚“ใŸใใ
  3. ใ˜ใฉใ†ใฏใ‚“ใฐใ„ใ

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ˜ใฉใ†ใฏใ‚“ใฐใ„ใ

A machine that gives you a drink when you put in money and press a button is a ใ˜ใฉใ†ใฏใ‚“ใฐใ„ใ (vending machine). A ใ‚Œใ„ใžใ†ใ“ (fridge) keeps drinks cold but takes no money, and a ใ›ใ‚“ใŸใใ (washing machine) washes clothes. ใ˜ใฉใ†ใฏใ‚“ใฐใ„ใ is long, but it breaks into ใ˜ใฉใ† (automatic) + ใฏใ‚“ใฐใ„ (selling) + ใ (machine). Splitting long words like this makes them far easier to keep.

Question 4

ใŠใใ‚ƒใใ•ใพใŒๅธฐใฃใŸใ‚‰ใ€ใธใ‚„ใฎใ‚ทใƒผใƒ„ใ‚’ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ใ‚‚ใฎใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใ—ใพใฃใฆ
  2. ใฏใ‚‰ใฃใฆ
  3. ใจใ‚Šใ‹ใˆใฆ

Answer: 3 โ€” ใจใ‚Šใ‹ใˆใฆ

Aใ‚’Bใซใจใ‚Šใ‹ใˆใ‚‹ means โ€˜to change A for Bโ€™, so โ€˜change the sheets for new onesโ€™ needs ใจใ‚Šใ‹ใˆใฆ. ใ—ใพใฃใฆ (put away) and ใฏใ‚‰ใฃใฆ (pay) do not go with ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ใ‚‚ใฎใซ. The particle is the clue: ใซ marks what you change to. Of the three verbs, only ใจใ‚Šใ‹ใˆใ‚‹ takes that pattern.

Question 5

ใ“ใฎใธใ‚„ใฏใพใฉใŒๅคงใใ„ใฎใงใ€ๆœใฏใจใฆใ‚‚๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใงใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใใ‚‰ใ„
  2. ๆ˜Žใ‚‹ใ„
  3. ใ›ใพใ„

Answer: 2 โ€” ๆ˜Žใ‚‹ใ„

Big windows (ใพใฉใŒๅคงใใ„) are the reason, so the room is ๆ˜Žใ‚‹ใ„ (ใ‚ใ‹ใ‚‹ใ„, bright) in the morning. ใใ‚‰ใ„ (dark) is the opposite of what big windows give you, and ใ›ใพใ„ (small, cramped) has nothing to do with windows. When a sentence gives a reason with ใฎใง, the answer has to follow from that reason. Ask โ€œwhat do big windows cause?โ€ before you look at the options.

Question 6

ใ‚ใ—ใŸใฎใ—ใ‘ใ‚“ใฏ9ๆ™‚ใซๅง‹ใพใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใŠใใ‚Œใชใ„ใงใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใœใฃใŸใ„ใซ
  2. ใ ใ‚“ใ ใ‚“
  3. ใกใ‚‡ใ†ใฉ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใœใฃใŸใ„ใซ

ใœใฃใŸใ„ใซ (absolutely) goes naturally with a strong โ€˜donโ€™tโ€™ - ใœใฃใŸใ„ใซใŠใใ‚Œใชใ„ใงใใ ใ•ใ„, โ€˜whatever you do, donโ€™t be lateโ€™. ใ ใ‚“ใ ใ‚“ (gradually) describes slow change, and ใกใ‚‡ใ†ใฉ (exactly) goes with times and amounts, not with a negative request. ใœใฃใŸใ„ใซ sits naturally with ๏ฝžใชใ„ใงใใ ใ•ใ„ and with ๏ฝžใฆใใ ใ•ใ„. It is worth learning as a pair with the negative request.

Question 7

ใ€Œ้ƒจๅฑ‹ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใธใ‚„
  2. ใถใ‚„
  3. ใธใ„ใ‚„

Answer: 1 โ€” ใธใ‚„

้ƒจๅฑ‹ (room) is read ใธใ‚„. It is a special reading: ้ƒจ is normally ใถ and ๅฑ‹ normally ใ‚„, which is why ใถใ‚„ is a tempting wrong answer. ใธใ„ใ‚„ (ๅนณ้‡Ž, a plain) is a different word altogether. ้ƒจๅฑ‹ is one of a handful of everyday words whose reading you cannot build from the separate kanji. Others at this level include ไปŠๆ—ฅ (ใใ‚‡ใ†) and ๅคงไบบ (ใŠใจใช).

Question 8

ใ€Œ่ท็‰ฉใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ‹ใ‚‚ใค
  2. ใซใถใค
  3. ใซใ‚‚ใค

Answer: 3 โ€” ใซใ‚‚ใค

่ท็‰ฉ (luggage) is read ใซใ‚‚ใค. ใซใถใค uses the other reading of ็‰ฉ (ใถใค) and is not a word, and ใ‹ใ‚‚ใค (่ฒจ็‰ฉ) means freight, a different word with a near-miss sound. Wrong readings in this part are built from real readings of each kanji put together the wrong way. If a reading โ€œlooks possibleโ€, check whether you have actually heard it.

Question 9

ใ€Œๅ—ไป˜ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ†ใ‘ใฅใ‘
  2. ใ†ใ‘ใคใ‘
  3. ใ˜ใ‚…ใคใ‘

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ†ใ‘ใคใ‘

ๅ—ไป˜ (reception) is read ใ†ใ‘ใคใ‘, with a clear ใค. ใ†ใ‘ใฅใ‘ adds a voiced sound that is not there, and ใ˜ใ‚…ใคใ‘ mixes the on-reading of ๅ— (ใ˜ใ‚…) into a word that uses the kun-reading. ๅ—ไป˜ is the sign you look for at a clinic, a company or city hall. It is worth knowing by sight, not only by sound.

Question 10

ใˆใ„ใŒใฏๅˆๅพŒ3ๆ™‚ใ‹ใ‚‰๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใฎใงใ€2ๆ™‚ๅŠใซ้ง…ใงไผšใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ€‚

  1. ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™
  2. ๅง‹ใพใ‚Šใพใ™
  3. ๆญขใพใ‚Šใพใ™

Answer: 2 โ€” ๅง‹ใพใ‚Šใพใ™

The film โ€˜starts from 3 p.m.โ€™, so they meet at half past two: ๅง‹ใพใ‚Šใพใ™ (ใฏใ˜ใพใ‚Šใพใ™, starts). ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ (ends) does not go with ใ‹ใ‚‰, and ๆญขใพใ‚Šใพใ™ (stops) is used for machines and trains, not films starting. Time words are the clue here: ใ‹ใ‚‰ pairs with starting, ใพใง with finishing.

Question 11

ใ”ใฟใฏใ€ใ“ใฎๅคงใใ„ใตใใ‚ใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ๅ‡บใ—ใฆ
  2. ๆŒใฃใฆ
  3. ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใฆ

Answer: 3 โ€” ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใฆ

ใตใใ‚ใซๅ…ฅใ‚Œใฆ (ใ„ใ‚Œใฆ) means โ€˜put it into the bagโ€™, which is what you do with rubbish. ๅ‡บใ—ใฆ (ใ ใ—ใฆ, take out) is the opposite direction, and ๆŒใฃใฆ (ใ‚‚ใฃใฆ, hold) does not take ใตใใ‚ใซ. ใซ + ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใ‚‹ (into) and ใ‹ใ‚‰ + ๅ‡บใ™ (out of) are mirror images. The particle tells you which way the action goes.

Question 12

ใ‚นใ‚ฟใƒƒใƒ•ใƒซใƒผใƒ ใงใ€ใƒ›ใƒ†ใƒซใฎใ›ใ„ใตใใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆใซ่กŒใใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ็€ใŒใˆใฆ
  2. ไผ‘ใ‚“ใง
  3. ๆด—ใฃใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ็€ใŒใˆใฆ

ใ›ใ„ใตใใซ็€ใŒใˆใ‚‹ (ใใŒใˆใ‚‹) means โ€˜change into the uniformโ€™, which is what staff do in the staff room before going to the desk. ไผ‘ใ‚“ใง (ใ‚„ใ™ใ‚“ใง, rest) and ๆด—ใฃใฆ (ใ‚ใ‚‰ใฃใฆ, wash) cannot take ใ›ใ„ใตใใซ. Hotel staff talk about ็€ใŒใˆ (changing clothes) every shift. The pattern is always [clothes] ใซ ็€ใŒใˆใ‚‹.

Question 13

ใƒ›ใƒ†ใƒซใฎใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆใง (At a hotel front desk)

  1. ใ‚ใšใ‹ใฃใฆใฏใ„ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“
  2. ใ‚ใšใ‹ใฃใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™
  3. ใ‚ใšใ‹ใ‚‹ใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚ใšใ‹ใ‚‹ใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™

The guest is too early to check in, but ใงใ‚‚ signals good news: the hotel โ€˜can look afterโ€™ the bags now, ใ‚ใšใ‹ใ‚‹ใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™. ใ‚ใšใ‹ใฃใฆใฏใ„ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ (must not) is not a helpful โ€˜butโ€™, and ใ‚ใšใ‹ใฃใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ (have done before) talks about past experience, not what is possible today. ใ‚ใšใ‹ใ‚‹ means to keep something for someone. Check-in is usually from 3 p.m. in Japan, and hotels routinely keep bags for early arrivals. If you work on a front desk you will say this sentence many times a day.

Question 14

ใ‹ใ„ใŽใ—ใค (The meeting room)

A๏ผšใ‹ใ„ใŽใ—ใคใ€ใ‚‚ใ†ไฝฟใˆใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ„ใ‚‹
  2. ใ„ใชใ„
  3. ใ„ใชใ‹ใฃใŸ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ„ใ‚‹

You have to wait because the people from the last meeting are โ€˜still insideโ€™ - ใพใ ไธญใซใ„ใ‚‹. ใ„ใชใ„ and ใ„ใชใ‹ใฃใŸ (are not / were not there) would mean the room is free, which contradicts ใ„ใ„ใˆ and ๅพ…ใฃใฆใใ ใ•ใ„. Read the whole of Bโ€™s reply before choosing: ใ„ใ„ใˆ at the start and ๅพ…ใฃใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ at the end both point the same way.

Question 15

  1. ่ฒทใฃใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚‹
  2. ่ฒทใฃใฆใŠใ
  3. ่ฒทใฃใฆใ—ใพใฃใŸ

Answer: 2 โ€” ่ฒทใฃใฆใŠใ

๏ฝžใฆใŠใ means doing something in advance to get ready, so ่ฒทใฃใฆใŠใใจใ„ใ„ is โ€˜itโ€™s a good idea to buy them in advanceโ€™. ๏ฝžใจใ„ใ„ needs a dictionary form, which rules out ่ฒทใฃใฆใ—ใพใฃใŸ (past), and ่ฒทใฃใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚‹ (have bought before) is about experience, not preparation. ๏ฝžใฆใŠใ is one of the most useful patterns for workplace Japanese: ใ˜ใ‚…ใ‚“ใณใ—ใฆใŠใ, ใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒผใ—ใฆใŠใ, ้›ป่ฉฑใ—ใฆใŠใ - all โ€œdoing it now so it is ready laterโ€.

๏ฝžใฐใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ expresses regret - โ€˜I wish I had studied moreโ€™ - so ๅ‹‰ๅผทใ™ใ‚Œใฐใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ is the set pattern. ๅ‹‰ๅผทใ—ใฆใ‚‚ใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ would mean โ€˜it was all right to studyโ€™, and ๅ‹‰ๅผทใ™ใ‚‹ใชใ‚‰ใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ is not a natural pattern. Learn ๏ฝžใฐใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ as a fixed expression of regret. Its natural partner is ใ‚‚ใฃใจ: ใ‚‚ใฃใจๆ—ฉใๆฅใ‚Œใฐใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ, ใ‚‚ใฃใจ็ทด็ฟ’ใ™ใ‚Œใฐใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸ.

Answer: 3 โ€” ๅ‡บใŸใฎใง

A asks what happened (ใฉใ†ใ—ใŸใ‚“ใงใ™ใ‹), so B gives a reason with ๏ฝžใฎใง: ใญใคใŒๅ‡บใŸใฎใง, โ€˜because I had a temperatureโ€™. ๏ฝžใฎใซ means โ€˜even thoughโ€™, which makes no sense here, and ๏ฝžใŸใ‚ใซ (in order to) would mean going to hospital in order to get a fever. When someone asks what happened, the answer usually gives a reason with ใ‹ใ‚‰ or ใฎใง. Look for the option that gives a reason.

๏ฝžใจ describes what always happens as a result: โ€˜if you hold the button down, it startsโ€™. ใŠใ—ใชใŒใ‚‰ (while pressing) and ใŠใ™ๅ‰ใซ (before pressing) do not give the condition that makes the machine work. ๅ‹•ใ (ใ†ใ”ใ) means to move or run. ๏ฝžใจ is used for things that always happen - instructions for machines, directions, natural results. That is why it appears so often in explanations of how to use something.

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ„ใ‚‰ใฃใ—ใ‚ƒใ„ใพใ›

A new guest arriving is greeted with ใ„ใ‚‰ใฃใ—ใ‚ƒใ„ใพใ› (welcome). ใ„ใฃใฆใ‚‰ใฃใ—ใ‚ƒใ„ใพใ› is said to a guest going out, and ใŠใ‹ใˆใ‚Šใชใ•ใ„ใพใ› to a guest coming back to the hotel - but this guest has not checked in yet. ใ‚ˆใ‚„ใ means reservation. Hotel staff use three greetings that learners mix up: ใ„ใ‚‰ใฃใ—ใ‚ƒใ„ใพใ› (arriving), ใ„ใฃใฆใ‚‰ใฃใ—ใ‚ƒใ„ใพใ› (going out), ใŠใ‹ใˆใ‚Šใชใ•ใ„ใพใ› (coming back). Answer: 2 โ€” 5ๆ™‚ๅŠ

The woman first says 6:30, then corrects herself (ใพใกใŒใˆใพใ—ใŸ) - the order is 900 boxes, not 600, so he must come at 5:30. 6:30 is the cancelled time, and 6:00 is never said. When you hear ใพใกใŒใˆใพใ—ใŸ or ใ˜ใ‚ƒใชใใฆ, the answer usually follows. Write the first number down if you need to, but expect it to change. He first asks for two strawberry cakes (800 yen), then changes his mind with ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Š: one strawberry (400) and one chocolate (350), which is 750 yen. 700 yen would be two chocolate cakes. ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Š is the classic signal that the plan is changing. Prices in listening items are often built from two items you have to add yourself. The total is never spoken aloud.

His uniform (ใ›ใ„ใตใ) is still at the cleaners, so he is told to wear a white shirt and black trousers. Answer: 2 โ€” ใพใ‚“ไธญ

Towels go in the middle machine (ใพใ‚“ไธญใฏใ‚ฟใ‚ชใƒซ). The far left is for sheets and the right for staff uniforms. The last sentence, saying sheets used to go in the middle machine (ๅ‰ใฏโ€ฆ), is there to confuse you - it describes the old system, not todayโ€™s. When a speaker says ๅ‰ใฏ (before) or ไปŠๆœˆใ‹ใ‚‰ (from this month), the item is testing whether you can tell the old rule from the new one.

The guest is out until about 5, so Maria goes into the room and leaves the pillow on the bed - ใƒ™ใƒƒใƒ‰ใฎไธŠใซใŠใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„. ใƒ•ใƒญใƒณใƒˆ is where Kobayashi works, not where the pillow goes, and the note never mentions leaving it outside the door. In memo questions, the โ€œwhyโ€ (the guest is out until 5) often explains the โ€œwhatโ€ (go in and leave it on the bed). Both are in the same paragraph.

Sweaters are always ready the next day at 6 p.m. (ใคใŽใฎๆ—ฅใฎๅค•ๆ–น6ๆ™‚), so it is tomorrow evening. The โ€˜before 9 a.m. means ready the same dayโ€™ rule is only for shirts - that is the trap - and 9 a.m. is the drop-off deadline, not a pick-up time. The rule in brackets on the shirt line applies only to shirts. Read which line a condition belongs to before you use it.

What to do with your score

Whatever you scored, the useful part is the review. Go back through every question you got wrong, and every one you got right by guessing, and sort them by cause - a word you did not know, a pattern you half-knew, or a detail you missed in the audio. How to review a mock test sets out a method you can repeat after every set. And remember the estimate is only an estimate: why JFT-Basic scores are out of 250 explains what the number can and cannot tell you.

When you are ready, sit Mock Exam 8 under the same conditions, then check it against the Mock Exam 8 answers.

What to do with your mistakes

  1. Note which section cost you the most points โ€” the accuracy calculator shows it at a glance โ€” then read the guide for it: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening, Reading.
  2. Drill it with the free 24-question practice test, which explains every answer as you go.
  3. Only then sit the next full set โ€” a few days later, under real conditions. How to review a mock test goes into more detail.
