Sit Mock Exam 9 first, under real conditions - one 60-minute clock, headphones on, nothing else open. The explanations below give every answer away, and a set you have already read cannot tell you anything about your level.

This set leans on paperwork and the neighbourhood: registering your address at city hall, opening times at the bank, sending a parcel, renting a flat, rubbish days, a water-supply notice from the landlord, a town festival and a disaster drill. The rest is ordinary daily life and work. If you want more after this one, here are all ten mock exams.

  1. ใฏใ‚“ใ“
  2. ใ‚ใ„ใ—
  3. ใตใ†ใจใ†

Answer: 1 โ€” ใฏใ‚“ใ“

A small thing with your name on it that you press onto documents instead of signing is a ใฏใ‚“ใ“ (personal seal). ใ‚ใ„ใ— (business card) also carries your name, but you hand it over rather than press it on paper. ใตใ†ใจใ† (envelope) is what you put documents in. ใŠใ™ means to press or stamp, and ใ—ใ‚‡ใ‚‹ใ„ means documents. You will meet ใฏใ‚“ใ“ at the bank, at city hall and when you sign a rental contract, so it is worth knowing well.

Question 2

  1. ใƒ‘ใ‚ฝใ‚ณใƒณ
  2. ใ›ใ‚“ใŸใใ
  3. ใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒผใ

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒผใ

The machine you use to make many sheets of the same handout (ใ—ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†) before a meeting is the ใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒผใ (photocopier). You can write a document on a ใƒ‘ใ‚ฝใ‚ณใƒณ (computer), but it does not make paper copies itself. ใ›ใ‚“ใŸใใ is a washing machine. ไฝ•ใพใ„ใ‚‚ means many sheets. Katakana words for office machines like this one turn up often in the workplace questions.

Question 3

ใ‚ขใƒ‘ใƒผใƒˆใ‚„ใƒžใƒณใ‚ทใƒงใƒณใฎใธใ‚„ใ‚’ๅ€Ÿใ‚Šใฆใ„ใ‚‹ไบบใŒใ€ๆฏŽๆœˆๅคงๅฎถใ•ใ‚“ใซใฏใ‚‰ใ†ใŠ้‡‘ใงใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใใ‚…ใ†ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†
  2. ใ‚„ใกใ‚“
  3. ใงใ‚“ใใ ใ„

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ‚„ใกใ‚“

Money you pay your landlord (ๅคงๅฎถใ•ใ‚“, ใŠใŠใ‚„ใ•ใ‚“) every month for a rented room is ใ‚„ใกใ‚“ (rent). ใใ‚…ใ†ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ† (salary) is money you receive, not pay. ใงใ‚“ใใ ใ„ (electricity bill) is monthly too, but it goes to the power company, not the landlord. ๅ€Ÿใ‚Šใ‚‹ (ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚‹) means to rent or borrow. The same ใ ใ„ (ไปฃ) appears in ใงใ‚“ใใ ใ„ and ใ™ใ„ใฉใ†ใ ใ„ (water bill) - it means a charge or fee.

Question 4

ๅผ•ใฃใ“ใ—ใ‚’ใ—ใŸใ‚‰ใ€ไบŒ้€ฑ้–“ใฎใ†ใกใซใ€ๅธ‚ๅฝนๆ‰€ใซๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ไฝๆ‰€ใ‚’๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใจใฉใ‘ใฆ
  2. ใ‚ใšใ‘ใฆ
  3. ใ‹ใˆใ—ใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใจใฉใ‘ใฆ

ใจใฉใ‘ใ‚‹ here means to report or notify an office officially, so ไฝๆ‰€ใ‚’ใจใฉใ‘ใ‚‹ is to register your new address at city hall (ๅธ‚ๅฝนๆ‰€, ใ—ใ‚„ใใ—ใ‚‡). ใ‚ใšใ‘ใ‚‹ means to leave something in someoneโ€™s care, and ใ‹ใˆใ™ means to give back - neither works with an address. ๅผ•ใฃใ“ใ— (ใฒใฃใ“ใ—) is moving house. In real life this is one of the first things you do after moving, so the verb is worth learning with its noun, ใจใฉใ‘ (a notification form).

Question 5

ใ“ใฎไป•ไบ‹ใฏ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ๅฐ‘ใ—ๅพ…ใฃใฆใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใจใใฉใ
  2. ใพใ
  3. ใ‚‚ใ†ใ™ใ

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚‚ใ†ใ™ใ

ใ‚‚ใ†ใ™ใ means very soon, which matches please wait a little (ๅฐ‘ใ—ๅพ…ใฃใฆใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„). ใจใใฉใ (sometimes) does not fit a single job finishing. ใพใ  (still, not yet) needs a negative, as in ใพใ ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“, so ใพใ ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ is wrong. Adverbs of time are a favourite target in this part, so check whether the verb after the gap is positive or negative.

Question 6

ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ใใคใฏๅฐ‘ใ—๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใฆใ€้•ทใๆญฉใใจ่ถณใŒใ„ใŸใใชใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใใคใ
  2. ใฒใ‚ใ
  3. ใ‚„ใ™ใ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใใคใ

ใใคใ„ means tight, and tight shoes make your feet hurt (่ถณใŒใ„ใŸใใชใ‚‹) when you walk a long way. ใฒใ‚ใ„ (wide, roomy) would make shoes more comfortable, not less. ใ‚„ใ™ใ„ (cheap) says nothing about how the shoes feel. Note the ใฆ-form of an ใ„-adjective: ใใคใ„ becomes ใใคใใฆ. The opposite of ใใคใ„ is ใ‚†ใ‚‹ใ„ (loose).

Question 7

ใ€Œไฝๆ‰€ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ˜ใ‚…ใ—ใ‚‡
  2. ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡
  3. ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใ‚‡

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡

ไฝๆ‰€ (address) is read ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡, with a long ใ† after ใ˜ใ‚…. ใ˜ใ‚…ใ—ใ‚‡ drops the long vowel, a very common mistake. ใ—ใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใ‚‡ swaps which sound is voiced. You will see this word on almost every form at city hall and the bank. Long and short vowels are the commonest trap in the reading questions: say the word aloud slowly and count the beats.

Question 8

ใ€Œๅ…ˆ้€ฑใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ›ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…
  2. ใœใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…ใ†
  3. ใ›ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…ใ†

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ›ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…ใ†

ๅ…ˆ้€ฑ (last week) is read ใ›ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…ใ†. ใ›ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚… drops the long vowel, and is a different word (้ธๆ‰‹, athlete). ใœใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…ใ† wrongly voices the first sound. Learn it with ไปŠ้€ฑ (ใ“ใ‚“ใ—ใ‚…ใ†, this week) and ๆฅ้€ฑ (ใ‚‰ใ„ใ—ใ‚…ใ†, next week). Words that differ only by a long vowel are a classic distractor, so read every option to the end.

Question 9

ใ€Œไผš่ญฐใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ‹ใ„ใŽ
  2. ใŒใ„ใŽ
  3. ใ‹ใ„ใ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‹ใ„ใŽ

ไผš่ญฐ (meeting) is read ใ‹ใ„ใŽ: unvoiced ใ‹ at the start, voiced ใŽ at the end. ใŒใ„ใŽ voices the wrong sound, and ใ‹ใ„ใ leaves the second sound unvoiced. The same ไผš is read ใ‹ใ„ in ไผš็คพ (ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒ). Voicing marks (ใ‚›) are the other common trap - check each one.

Question 10

ๆฏŽๆœใ€้›ป่ปŠใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ไผš็คพใธ่กŒใใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ๅ…ฅใฃใฆ
  2. ไน—ใฃใฆ
  3. ๅ‡บใฆ

Answer: 2 โ€” ไน—ใฃใฆ

You ride a train with ไน—ใ‚‹ (ใฎใ‚‹), and the particle ใซ marks what you get on: ้›ป่ปŠใซไน—ใ‚‹. ๅ…ฅใ‚‹ (ใฏใ„ใ‚‹) is to enter a room or building, not to ride a vehicle. ๅ‡บใ‚‹ (ใงใ‚‹) means to leave, and would take ใ‚’ or ใ‹ใ‚‰, not ใซ, with a train. Remember the particle pair: ้›ป่ปŠใซไน—ใ‚‹ (get on), ้›ป่ปŠใ‚’้™ใ‚Šใ‚‹ (ใŠใ‚Šใ‚‹, get off).

Question 11

ใ‹ใœใ‚’ใฒใ„ใŸใฎใงใ€ใใฎใ†ใฏไผš็คพใ‚’๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใ€‚

  1. ๅง‹ใ‚ใพใ—ใŸ
  2. ๅƒใใพใ—ใŸ
  3. ไผ‘ใฟใพใ—ใŸ

Answer: 3 โ€” ไผ‘ใฟใพใ—ใŸ

Because you caught a cold (ใ‹ใœใ‚’ใฒใ„ใŸ), you took the day off: ไผš็คพใ‚’ไผ‘ใฟใพใ—ใŸ (ใ‚„ใ™ใฟใพใ—ใŸ). ๅƒใ (ใฏใŸใ‚‰ใ) takes ใง for the place, ไผš็คพใงๅƒใ, so ไผš็คพใ‚’ๅƒใใพใ—ใŸ is wrong grammar. ๅง‹ใ‚ใ‚‹ (ใฏใ˜ใ‚ใ‚‹, to start) does not make sense with a company here. Check the particle before the gap - it often rules out an option on grammar alone.

Question 12

ใ“ใฎ็”บใงใฏใ€ใ”ใฟใ‚’ๅ‡บใ™ๆ›œๆ—ฅใŒ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใ„ใพใ™ใ€‚ใ‚‚ใˆใ‚‹ใ”ใฟใฏๆœˆๆ›œๆ—ฅใจๆœจๆ›œๆ—ฅใงใ™ใ€‚

  1. ๆฑบใพใฃใฆ
  2. ๅง‹ใพใฃใฆ
  3. ๆญขใพใฃใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ๆฑบใพใฃใฆ

ๆฑบใพใฃใฆใ„ใ‚‹ (ใใพใฃใฆใ„ใ‚‹) means it is fixed or decided, which is why the next sentence can name the days for burnable rubbish (ใ‚‚ใˆใ‚‹ใ”ใฟ). ๅง‹ใพใฃใฆใ„ใ‚‹ (has started) and ๆญขใพใฃใฆใ„ใ‚‹ (has stopped) do not describe a rubbish schedule. ๆ›œๆ—ฅ (ใ‚ˆใ†ใณ) means day of the week. Compare the transitive ๆฑบใ‚ใ‚‹ (ใใ‚ใ‚‹, to decide), as in the notice in Questions 41-42: ๆฑบใ‚ใ‚‰ใ‚ŒใŸๅ ดๆ‰€ (the set place).

  2. ๆ›ธใใชใŒใ‚‰
  3. ๆ›ธใ„ใฆใ‹ใ‚‰

Answer: 3 โ€” ๆ›ธใ„ใฆใ‹ใ‚‰

ใ€œใฆใ‹ใ‚‰ means after doing: write the address on the form first, then hand it in at counter 3. ๆ›ธใ‹ใชใ„ใง (without writing) contradicts being given a form to fill in. ๆ›ธใใชใŒใ‚‰ (while writing) would mean handing it in while still writing. ใพใฉใใก is a service counter. Order words such as ใฆใ‹ใ‚‰, ๅ‰ใซ and ๅพŒใง are tested in almost every set, so learn them as a group.

Answer: 1 โ€” ๅ‡บใ•ใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“

B says no, magazines (ใ–ใฃใ—) must go out on old-paper day (ๅคใ„็ด™ใฎๆ—ฅ): ใ€œใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ means must. ๅ‡บใ•ใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ (you donโ€™t have to put them out) does not answer the question about which day. ๅ‡บใ—ใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ talks about past experience, not a rule. ใ‚‚ใˆใ‚‹ใ”ใฟ is burnable rubbish. Compare ใ€œใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ (you donโ€™t have to) - it is the mirror image of ใ€œใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ and a favourite distractor.

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ—ใฆใฟใŸใ„

ใ€œใฆใฟใŸใ„ใจๆ€ใฃใฆใ„ใพใ™ means Iโ€™d like to try doing it. B has never skied (ใพใ ใงใ™), so a past form cannot follow. ใ—ใฆใ—ใพใฃใŸ (I ended up doing it) and ใ—ใฆใŠใ„ใŸ (I did it in advance) both say it already happened, which contradicts ใพใ ใงใ™. For a past experience, Japanese uses ใ€œใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™, which is what A asks about in the first line.

  1. ใ‹ใ‚‰
  2. ใŒ
  3. ใฎใง

Answer: 2 โ€” ใŒ

ใŒ here means but, joining two contrasting facts: the counter closes at 3, but the ATM works until 9 p.m. ใ‹ใ‚‰ and ใฎใง both mean because, and the counter closing is not the reason the ATM stays open. ้–‰ใพใ‚‹ (ใ—ใพใ‚‹) means to close. ใŒ meaning but is softer than ใงใ‚‚ and joins two clauses in one sentence.

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‚ใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“

ใพใ ใ‚ใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ means I donโ€™t know yet, which fits Iโ€™ll contact you as soon as itโ€™s decided (ๆฑบใพใฃใŸใ‚‰). ใ‚ใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ—ใŸ (understood) and ใ‚ใ‹ใฃใฆใ„ใพใ™ (I know) both say B already has the answer, which contradicts the second sentence. ใพใ  with a negative means not yet. ใพใ  + negative (not yet) and ใ‚‚ใ† + positive (already) are a useful pair to learn together.

B did not understand ใ”ใใซใ‚…ใ† (a polite word for filling in a form), so B politely asks for simpler words: ใ€œใฆใ„ใŸใ ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ‹ is a polite request. ใ‚ใ‚ŠใŒใจใ†ใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ—ใŸ closes a conversation, and ใฉใ†ใžใ‚ˆใ‚ใ—ใ is a greeting, so neither asks for help. ใ‚„ใ•ใ—ใ„ใ“ใจใฐ here means easy words. Asking for easier words is a skill you will genuinely need at city hall and the bank, where staff often use polite forms you have not met.

The man first plans Monday, but changes his mind when he hears city hall stays open late on Thursdays, so he goes on Thursday evening after work (ไป•ไบ‹ใฎใ‚ใจใง). ๆœˆๆ›œๆ—ฅใฎๆœ is the abandoned plan. ๆœจๆ›œๆ—ฅใฎๆœ is wrong because he will be at work then. ใ‚ใ„ใฆใ„ใ‚‹ means open. Answer: 2 โ€” ใ”ใฟใฎๆ—ฅใŒใกใŒใฃใŸใ‹ใ‚‰

Both time and the bag are ruled out in the audio: ๆ™‚้–“ใฏใพใ ใ ใ„ใ˜ใ‚‡ใ†ใถ (Iโ€™m still in time) and ใตใใ‚ใฏใ„ใ„ใ‚“ใงใ™ (the bag is fine). M: What time shall we go cherry-blossom viewing tomorrow? F: Sakura Park gets crowded, so Iโ€™d like to go early. How about 9? M: 9 is a bit difficultโ€ฆ I want to do my washing in the morning, so is 10 all right? F: Fine. Then 10 oโ€™clock in front of the station. Oh, actually, the station is crowded too, so letโ€™s make it the park entrance. M: All right.

Answer: 3 โ€” 10ๆ™‚ใซใ“ใ†ใˆใ‚“ใฎๅ…ฅใ‚Šๅฃ

Two things change. The time moves from 9 to 10 because the man wants to do his washing, and the place moves from the station to the park entrance after ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Š (on second thoughts). So it is 10 oโ€™clock at the park entrance. 9ๆ™‚ใซ้ง…ใฎๅ‰ and 10ๆ™‚ใซ้ง…ใฎๅ‰ are both plans that were dropped. ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Š is the single most important word in this section - when you hear it, the answer usually follows.

F: If you send this parcel normally, itโ€™s 850 yen. It will arrive the day after tomorrow. M: I see. Iโ€™d like it to arrive by tomorrowโ€ฆ F: In that case, express is 1,200 yen. It will arrive tomorrow morning. M: Hmmโ€ฆ Actually, the day after tomorrow is fine. Normal post, please.

Answer: 1 โ€” 850ๅ††

The man wants next-day delivery at first, but after hearing the express (ใใใŸใค) price he changes his mind with ใ‚„ใฃใฑใ‚Š and chooses normal post (ใตใคใ†) at 850 yen. 1,200ๅ†† is the express price he turns down. 2,050ๅ†† is the two prices added together, which nobody pays. ใ‚ใ•ใฃใฆ means the day after tomorrow. Prices and numbers in listening are often corrected or rejected, so note each one and who decides.

F: This is your first visit, isnโ€™t it? Please write your name and address on this form and hand it in at counter 2. M: OK. Should I hand in my health insurance card too? F: Yes, please. Oh, sorry - counter 2 is busy right now, so please hand it in at counter 3 next to it. M: Counter 3. Understood.

Answer: 3 โ€” ไธ‰็•ชใฎใพใฉใใก

The receptionist first says counter 2, then corrects herself because counter 2 is busy (ใ“ใ‚“ใงใ„ใพใ™) and sends him to counter 3 (ไธ‰็•ช). ไบŒ็•ชใฎใพใฉใใก is the first instruction, which was changed. M: This flat is a 5-minute walk from the station, and the rent is 70,000 yen. F: Thatโ€™s a bit expensive. M: Then how about this one? Itโ€™s a 15-minute walk from the station, but itโ€™s 55,000 yen. F: I cycle to work, so it can be far from the station. Is there anything a little cheaper? M: In that case thereโ€™s one at 48,000 yen, but itโ€™s 20 minutes from the station by bus. The 5-minute flat is too expensive (้ซ˜ใ„), and the cheapest one is too far (้ ใ™ใŽใ‚‹), so she chooses the 15-minute flat at 55,000 yen. Attention, please. Because of heavy rain, trains are delayed. Trains to Sakura Station usually leave from platform 2, but today they leave from platform 5. Please note that trains on platform 3 do not stop at Sakura Station.

Wednesday is not Monday, so it starts at 12:30 (12ๆ™‚ๅŠ). 12ๆ™‚ is the Monday exception, and 1ๆ™‚ๅŠ is when the new break ends. ใฆใ‚“ใ‘ใ‚“ means inspection. Words like ใ ใ‘ (only) and ใงใ‚‚ (but) usually mark the exception in an announcement.

  1. 760ๅ††
  2. 860ๅ††
  3. 960ๅ††

Answer: 1 โ€” 760ๅ††

On Mondays the vegetable bento is 100 yen cheaper, so 480 - 100 = 380 yen each, and two cost 760 yen. 960ๅ†† is the full price for two with no discount. 860ๅ†† takes 100 yen off only once instead of on each bento. ๅฎ‰ใใชใ‚‹ means to become cheaper. Look for the โ€ป note on a price list - discounts and conditions usually hide there.

What to do with your score

Mark yourself honestly, then go back over every question you missed and every one you got right by guessing. The method is in how to review a mock test: sort each mistake by cause - vocabulary, grammar, or a trap you fell for - because each cause needs a different fix.

Your raw mark out of 48 is not the same as a JFT-Basic score out of 250. How JFT-Basic scaled scoring works explains why, and what a good mark on a mock does and does not tell you. When you are ready, sit Mock Exam 10 under the same conditions, then check it with the Mock Exam 10 answer guide.

What to do with your mistakes

  1. Note which section cost you the most points โ€” the accuracy calculator shows it at a glance โ€” then read the guide for it: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening, Reading.
  2. Drill it with the free 24-question practice test, which explains every answer as you go.
  3. Only then sit the next full set โ€” a few days later, under real conditions. How to review a mock test goes into more detail.
