This set leans on food service - a restaurant and its kitchen. You will meet orders, the menu, allergy labels, the register, closing-up jobs and a shift rota, alongside the usual mix of daily life. If you are heading for the food service route, these are the situations you will be in from your first week. The other sets are on the page with all ten mock exams.

Question 1

  1. ใƒฌใ‚ทใƒผใƒˆ
  2. ใƒกใƒ‹ใƒฅใƒผ
  3. ใ‚ซใƒฌใƒณใƒ€ใƒผ

Answer: 2 โ€” ใƒกใƒ‹ใƒฅใƒผ

The description is something customers look at to choose what to eat, with dish names and prices (ใญใ ใ‚“, price) on it: a ใƒกใƒ‹ใƒฅใƒผ (menu). A ใƒฌใ‚ทใƒผใƒˆ (receipt) also shows prices, but you get it after paying, not before choosing. A ใ‚ซใƒฌใƒณใƒ€ใƒผ (calendar) has dates, not dishes. In the exam, read the whole description before looking at the options - the deciding detail here is the second half of the first sentence.

Question 2

ๅฐๆ‰€ใงไฝฟใ†ใฉใ†ใใงใ™ใ€‚ใ“ใ‚Œใง่‚‰ใ‚„ใ‚„ใ•ใ„ใ‚’ๅฐใ•ใๅˆ‡ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใชใน
  2. ใŠใ•ใ‚‰
  3. ใปใ†ใกใ‚‡ใ†

Answer: 3 โ€” ใปใ†ใกใ‚‡ใ†

A kitchen tool (ๅฐๆ‰€ ใ ใ„ใฉใ“ใ‚, ใฉใ†ใ) that you cut meat and vegetables with is a ใปใ†ใกใ‚‡ใ†, a kitchen knife. The particle ใง in ใ“ใ‚Œใง marks the tool you do it with. A ใชใน (pot) is for cooking and ใŠใ•ใ‚‰ (plate) is for serving - neither cuts anything. Kitchen nouns worth learning as a group: ใปใ†ใกใ‚‡ใ†, ใพใชใ„ใŸ (chopping board), ใชใน, ใƒ•ใƒฉใ‚คใƒ‘ใƒณ, ใŠใ•ใ‚‰.

Question 3

ใ›ใคใ‚ใ„ใ‚’่ชญใ‚“ใงใ€ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ใ„ใ„ใ“ใจใฐใ‚’ไธ€ใคใˆใ‚‰ใ‚“ใงใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใ‹ใ•
  2. ใ‹ใฐใ‚“
  3. ใ•ใ„ใต

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‹ใ•

Something you hold on a rainy day so as not to get wet (ใฌใ‚Œใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ†ใซ), and can fold small when not in use, is a ใ‹ใ• (umbrella). A ใ‹ใฐใ‚“ (bag) and a ใ•ใ„ใต (wallet) are both carried in the hand, but neither keeps the rain off. ใชใ„ใ‚ˆใ†ใซ means โ€œso as not toโ€ - a pattern that turns up across every section of the test.

Question 4

ใ“ใฎใ‚นใƒผใƒ—ใฏใงใใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Šใงใ€ใจใฆใ‚‚๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใงใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ๆฐ—ใ‚’ใคใ‘ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใ‚ใพใ„
  2. ใคใ‚ใŸใ„
  3. ใ‚ใคใ„

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚ใคใ„

ใงใใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Š means โ€˜only just madeโ€™, so the soup is ใ‚ใคใ„ (hot) and the speaker warns you to be careful (ๆฐ—ใ‚’ใคใ‘ใฆ). ใคใ‚ใŸใ„ (cold) contradicts โ€˜just madeโ€™, and ใ‚ใพใ„ (sweet) is a taste, which is no reason to be careful. The ta-form + ใฐใ‹ใ‚Š means โ€œjust didโ€: ใงใใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Š, ๆฅใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Š, ่ฒทใฃใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Š.

Question 5

ใ’ใ‚“ใ‹ใ‚“ใงใใคใ‚’ใฌใ„ใงใ€ใใคใฐใ“ใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใฆ
  2. ใฏใ„ใฆ
  3. ใใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใฆ

You take your shoes off in the entrance (ใ’ใ‚“ใ‹ใ‚“) and put them in the shoe cupboard (ใใคใฐใ“), so ๅ…ฅใ‚Œใฆ (ใ„ใ‚Œใฆ, put in) is right. ใฏใ„ใฆ is the verb for putting shoes on, which is the opposite of what is happening, and ใใฆ is for wearing clothes on your body. Japanese splits โ€œwearโ€ by body part: ใใ‚‹ for the body, ใฏใ for feet and legs, ใ‹ใถใ‚‹ for the head.

Question 6

ใŠใใ‚ƒใใ•ใ‚“ใŒใšใฃใจๅพ…ใฃใฆใ„ใพใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ๆ–™็†ใ‚’ๅ‡บใ—ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š
  2. ใฏใ‚„ใ
  3. ใจใใฉใ

Answer: 2 โ€” ใฏใ‚„ใ

The customer has been waiting a long time (ใšใฃใจๅพ…ใฃใฆใ„ใพใ™), so the food should go out ใฏใ‚„ใ (quickly). ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š (slowly) fits the grammar but goes against the reason given, and ใจใใฉใ (sometimes) makes no sense for one order. Adverbs like ใฏใ‚„ใ, ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š and ใจใใฉใ all sit in the same slot, so grammar alone never decides these - the meaning does.

Question 7

ใ€Œๆ–™็†ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‚Š
  2. ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ‚Š
  3. ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ‚Š

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‚Š

ๆ–™็† (cooking, a dish) is read ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‚Š, with a long vowel in ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†. ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ‚Š drops that long vowel, and ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†ใ‚Š changes ใ‚Šใ‚‡ to ใ‚Šใ‚… - both are near-misses of the kind the exam uses. Long vowels (ใ‚‡ใ†, ใ‚…ใ†) are the most common trap in the reading questions. Say the word in your head and count the beats.

Question 8

ใ€Œๆณจๆ–‡ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ‚‚ใ‚“
  2. ใกใ‚…ใ‚‚ใ‚“
  3. ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ‚‚ใ‚“

Answer: 3 โ€” ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ‚‚ใ‚“

ๆณจๆ–‡ (an order, as in a restaurant order) is read ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ‚‚ใ‚“. ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ‚‚ใ‚“ wrongly voices the first sound, and ใกใ‚…ใ‚‚ใ‚“ loses the long vowel. You will hear ใ”ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ‚‚ใ‚“ใฏ? from staff in almost every restaurant in Japan. ๆณจ also appears in ๆณจๆ„ (ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ„, caution), which you will see on warning signs at work.

Question 9

ใ€Œๅ‡บๅฃใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใฆใใก
  2. ใงใใก
  3. ใงใใก

Answer: 2 โ€” ใงใใก

ๅ‡บๅฃ (exit) is read ใงใใก: ๅ‡บ is ใง and ๅฃ becomes ใใก in this compound. ใฆใใก has an unvoiced ใฆ, and ใงใใก keeps ใใก unvoiced. Learn it together with ๅ…ฅๅฃ (ใ„ใ‚Šใใก, entrance). The change from ใใก to ใใก is called rendaku - the second word in a compound often starts voiced.

Question 10

ใŠใใ‚ƒใใ•ใ‚“ใŒๅธฐใฃใŸใ‚‰ใ€ใƒ†ใƒผใƒ–ใƒซใฎใŠใ•ใ‚‰ใ‚’ใ‚ญใƒƒใƒใƒณใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ้‹ใ‚“ใง
  2. ่ตฐใฃใฆ
  3. ๅฃฒใฃใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ้‹ใ‚“ใง

You carry (้‹ใถ, ใฏใ“ใถ) the plates to the kitchen: ใŠใ•ใ‚‰ใ‚’ใ‚ญใƒƒใƒใƒณใซ้‹ใถ. ่ตฐใฃใฆ (ใฏใ—ใฃใฆ, run) cannot take ใŠใ•ใ‚‰ใ‚’ as an object, and ๅฃฒใฃใฆ (ใ†ใฃใฆ, sell) makes no sense for clearing a table. All three te-forms look reasonable in the gap. Read the words around it - ใŠใ•ใ‚‰ใ‚’ and ใ‚ญใƒƒใƒใƒณใซ - before choosing.

Question 11

ใ“ใฎ้›ป่ปŠใฏใ€ใคใŽใฎ้ง…ใงไบ”ๅˆ†ใใ‚‰ใ„๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใ€‚

  1. ่ตฐใ‚Šใพใ™
  2. ๆญขใพใ‚Šใพใ™
  3. ไน—ใ‚Šใพใ™

Answer: 2 โ€” ๆญขใพใ‚Šใพใ™

The train waits at the next station (ใคใŽใฎ้ง…ใง) for about five minutes, so ๆญขใพใ‚Šใพใ™ (ใจใพใ‚Šใพใ™, stops) is right. ่ตฐใ‚Šใพใ™ (ใฏใ—ใ‚Šใพใ™, runs) does not happen at a station, and ไน—ใ‚Šใพใ™ (ใฎใ‚Šใพใ™, get on) is something a person does, not the train. Learn it with its transitive partner ๆญขใ‚ใ‚‹ (ใจใ‚ใ‚‹), โ€œto stop somethingโ€, as in ใ‚ฌใ‚นใ‚’ๆญขใ‚ใ‚‹.

Question 12

ใŠใใ‚ƒใใ•ใ‚“ใŒใŠ้‡‘ใ‚’ใฏใ‚‰ใฃใŸใ‚‰ใ€ใƒฌใ‚ทใƒผใƒˆใ‚’๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ่ฒธใ—ใฆ
  2. ๅ€Ÿใ‚Šใฆ
  3. ๆธกใ—ใฆ

Answer: 3 โ€” ๆธกใ—ใฆ

After the customer pays, the staff member hands over the receipt: ๆธกใ—ใฆ (ใ‚ใŸใ—ใฆ, hand over). ่ฒธใ—ใฆ (ใ‹ใ—ใฆ, lend) and ๅ€Ÿใ‚Šใฆ (ใ‹ใ‚Šใฆ, borrow) both imply the receipt comes back, which it does not. ใ‹ใ™ and ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚‹ are a classic pair to mix up: ใ‹ใ™ is โ€œlendโ€ (it leaves you), ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚‹ is โ€œborrowโ€ (it comes to you).

  2. ้ฃŸในใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Œใฐ
  3. ใซใŒใฆใชใ‚‰

Answer: 3 โ€” ใซใŒใฆใชใ‚‰

The waiter recommends a sweet, mild curry, which only makes sense for someone who does not like spicy food: ใซใŒใฆใชใ‚‰, โ€˜if youโ€™re not good with itโ€™. ใ™ใใชใฎใง (โ€˜because you like itโ€™) would lead to recommending the spicy one, and ้ฃŸในใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Œใฐ (โ€˜if youโ€™ve eaten it beforeโ€™) has nothing to do with suggesting a milder dish. ใซใŒใฆ means โ€œnot good withโ€ or โ€œnot keen onโ€, and is the polite way to say you dislike a food.

Answer: 1 โ€” ใŠใ‚ˆใ„ใ ใ‚Šใ€ใคใ‚Šใ‚’ใ—ใŸใ‚Šใ—ใพใ—ใŸ

The question is about last Sunday (ใ—ใพใ—ใŸใ‹), so the answer must be in the past: ใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ—ใพใ—ใŸ lists things you did. ใŠใ‚ˆใใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™ is a future plan, and ใŠใ‚ˆใ„ใงใ„ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ใงใ™ means โ€˜Iโ€™m swimming right nowโ€™, which does not answer a question about Sunday. ใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ™ใ‚‹ gives examples of what you did, without claiming it is a complete list.

  2. ใ™ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ใงใ™
  3. ใ—ใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Šใงใ™

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ™ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ใงใ™

B has not finished (ใพใ ใงใ™) and is about to start (ไปŠใ‹ใ‚‰), so dictionary form + ใจใ“ใ‚ใงใ™, โ€˜Iโ€™m just about to do itโ€™, is right. ใ—ใŸใจใ“ใ‚ใงใ™ and ใ—ใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Šใงใ™ both mean โ€˜Iโ€™ve just done itโ€™, which contradicts ใพใ ใงใ™. The three ใจใ“ใ‚ forms: ใ™ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ (about to), ใ—ใฆใ„ใ‚‹ใจใ“ใ‚ (in the middle of), ใ—ใŸใจใ“ใ‚ (just finished).

Getting up at five is the way to catch the six oโ€™clock train, so ใŸใ‚ใซ (โ€˜in order toโ€™) is right. ใชใŒใ‚‰ means doing two things at the same time, and ใพใงใซ sets a deadline - neither explains why B gets up early. ใŸใ‚ใซ with a verb needs the same person to control both actions - I get up early so that I can catch the train.

The film is at four (ๅ››ๆ™‚), but they meet thirty minutes before it starts (ไธ‰ๅๅˆ†ๅ‰), so they meet at ไธ‰ๆ™‚ๅŠ (half past three). ไบŒๆ™‚ is the first time suggested and rejected, and ๅ››ๆ™‚ is the film, not the meeting - the question asks when they meet (ไผšใ„ใพใ™). Read the question before the clip: it asks when they meet, not when the film starts, and that difference is the whole item.

There are two corrections: not at night but by 8 in the morning (ๆœใ€ๅ…ซๆ™‚ใพใงใซ), and not Tuesday but Wednesday because Tuesday is a holiday this week (ไผ‘ใฟใฎๆ—ฅ). So the answer is ๆฐดๆ›œๆ—ฅใฎๆœ. ็ซๆ›œๆ—ฅใฎๆœ misses the day change, and ๆฐดๆ›œๆ—ฅใฎๅคœ misses the time change. Two corrections in one clip is common in the real test. Note each change as it happens.

The blue box next to the register (ใƒฌใ‚ธใฎๆจชใฎ้’ใ„ใฏใ“) is where the money is, so ้’ใ„ใฏใ“ใซๅ…ฅใ‚Œใ‚‹ and ใƒฌใ‚ธใฎไธญใซๅ…ฅใ‚Œใ‚‹ mix up the money and the receipt. This item tests whether you kept two places apart: where the money is, and where the receipt goes.

Allergy labels like this are something you will read every day in food service. ใ‚‚ใจ means source or origin - ใ‚ขใƒฌใƒซใ‚ฎใƒผใฎใ‚‚ใจ is the ingredient that causes the allergy.

Question 48

14ๆ™‚ๅŠใซใ€Cใ‚’ใ”ใฏใ‚“ๅคงใ‚‚ใ‚Šใง้ฃŸในใพใ™ใ€‚ใ„ใใ‚‰ใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. 650ๅ††
  2. 750ๅ††
  3. 850ๅ††

Answer: 1 โ€” 650ๅ††

C is 750ๅ††, a large rice (ๅคงใ‚‚ใ‚Š, ใŠใŠใ‚‚ใ‚Š) is free for C, and after 14:00 everything is 100ๅ†† cheaper, so 14:30 makes it 650ๅ††. 750ๅ†† forgets the afternoon discount, and 850ๅ†† wrongly adds 100ๅ†† for the large rice. Three rules apply at once here: the base price, the large-rice rule for C, and the afternoon discount.

What to do with your score

Mark the set, then go back through every question - the ones you got right as well. A right answer you guessed is a gap you have not found yet. How to review a mock test sets out a method that takes about as long as the test itself, and how JFT-Basic scoring works explains why a raw count out of 48 is only a rough guide to the score out of 250.

When you are ready, sit Mock Exam 5 under the same conditions, then read its answers and explanations.

What to do with your mistakes

  1. Note which section cost you the most points โ€” the accuracy calculator shows it at a glance โ€” then read the guide for it: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening, Reading.
  2. Drill it with the free 24-question practice test, which explains every answer as you go.
  3. Only then sit the next full set โ€” a few days later, under real conditions. How to review a mock test goes into more detail.
