Before you read on, sit Mock Exam 5 under real conditions: 60 minutes, headphones on, nothing else open. Every explanation below gives the answers away, so a score taken after reading this page tells you very little.

This set leans towards construction and building cleaning - morning safety meetings, helmets and tools, the weather deciding the dayโ€™s work, cleaning rotas for offices and stations, and a foreman who changes his mind. The rest is ordinary daily life. If you want a different mix, there are all ten mock exams to choose from.

  1. ใฆใถใใ‚
  2. ใƒžใ‚นใ‚ฏ
  3. ใใคใ—ใŸ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใฆใถใใ‚

Something you put on your hands (ๆ‰‹ใซใฏใ‚ใ‚‹) so you donโ€™t get hurt, made of cloth or leather, is ใฆใถใใ‚ (gloves). A ใƒžใ‚นใ‚ฏ covers your mouth and nose, and ใใคใ—ใŸ (socks) go on your feet, not your hands. Learn the verbs in chunks: gloves are ใฏใ‚ใ‚‹ or ใ™ใ‚‹, helmets and hats are ใ‹ใถใ‚‹, and glasses are ใ‹ใ‘ใ‚‹.

  1. ใปใ†ใ
  2. ใฏใ—ใ”
  3. ใƒใ‚ฑใƒ„

Answer: 2 โ€” ใฏใ—ใ”

You climb up (ไธŠใ‚‹, ใฎใผใ‚‹) and down (ไธ‹ใ‚Šใ‚‹, ใŠใ‚Šใ‚‹) a ใฏใ—ใ” (ladder) to work in high places (้ซ˜ใ„ๆ‰€, ใŸใ‹ใ„ใจใ“ใ‚). A ใปใ†ใ is a broom and a ใƒใ‚ฑใƒ„ is a bucket - both are tools, but you do not climb on them. The ใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ™ใ‚‹ pattern lists typical actions - here, climbing up and down.

Question 3

  2. ใ“ใ†ใฟใ‚“ใ‹ใ‚“
  3. ใจใ—ใ‚‡ใ‹ใ‚“

Answer: 3 โ€” ใจใ—ใ‚‡ใ‹ใ‚“

A place where you read and borrow (ๅ€Ÿใ‚Šใ‚‹, ใ‹ใ‚Šใ‚‹) books with a card is a ใจใ—ใ‚‡ใ‹ใ‚“ (library). A ใณใ˜ใ‚…ใคใ‹ใ‚“ is an art museum, and a ใ“ใ†ใฟใ‚“ใ‹ใ‚“ is a community centre - neither is where you borrow books. Places ending in ใ€œใ‹ใ‚“ (้คจ) are buildings with a purpose: ใจใ—ใ‚‡ใ‹ใ‚“, ใณใ˜ใ‚…ใคใ‹ใ‚“, ใŸใ„ใ„ใใ‹ใ‚“.

Question 4

  1. ใ—ใ‚…ใฃใฑใค
  2. ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ—
  3. ใ‚ˆใ‚„ใ

Answer: 2 โ€” ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ—

Because of strong rain and wind, outdoor work was called off: ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ— (ไธญๆญข, cancellation) + ใซใชใ‚‹. ใ—ใ‚…ใฃใฑใค (departure) and ใ‚ˆใ‚„ใ (reservation) are nouns that fit the grammar but not the meaning. On a site you will hear ้›จๅคฉไธญๆญข (ใ†ใฆใ‚“ใกใ‚…ใ†ใ—), โ€˜cancelled if it rainsโ€™, on almost every wet morning.

Question 5

  1. ๆ—ฉใ‚ใซ
  2. ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š
  3. ใชใ‹ใชใ‹

Answer: 1 โ€” ๆ—ฉใ‚ใซ

The roads get crowded (ใ“ใ‚€) in the evening, so the advice is to leave early: ๆ—ฉใ‚ใซ (ใฏใ‚„ใ‚ใซ, a little earlier than usual). ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š (slowly, taking your time) is the opposite of the advice, and ใชใ‹ใชใ‹ needs a negative verb after it (ใชใ‹ใชใ‹ๆฅใชใ„). ใ€œใŸใปใ†ใŒใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใ‚ˆ is friendly advice, and worth knowing for the conversation section too.

Question 6

  1. ใญใ ใ‚“
  2. ใฆใ‚“ใ
  3. ใ‚ˆใ†ใณ

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‚ˆใ†ใณ

Rubbish goes out on the morning of a fixed (ใใพใฃใŸ) day of the week: ใ‚ˆใ†ใณ (ๆ›œๆ—ฅ). ใญใ ใ‚“ (price) and ใฆใ‚“ใ (weather) cannot be โ€˜decidedโ€™ days you put rubbish out on. Rubbish rules in Japan are set by day of the week, so ไฝ•ๆ›œๆ—ฅ is one of the first questions to ask in a new dormitory.

Question 7

ใ€Œ้“ๅ…ทใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใฉใ†ใ
  2. ใจใ†ใ
  3. ใฉใ†ใ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใฉใ†ใ

้“ๅ…ท (tools) is read ใฉใ†ใ, with voiced sounds at both ends. ใจใ†ใ drops the voicing on the first sound, and ใฉใ†ใ drops it on the last. You will hear it every day on site: ้“ๅ…ทใ‚’ใ‹ใŸใฅใ‘ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„, put the tools away. ้“ๅ…ท is a workplace essential: ้“ๅ…ท็ฎฑ (ใฉใ†ใใฐใ“) is a toolbox.

Question 8

ใ€Œไผ‘ๆ—ฅใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใใ‚…ใ†ใซใก
  2. ใใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใค
  3. ใใ‚…ใ˜ใค

Answer: 2 โ€” ใใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใค

ไผ‘ๆ—ฅ (day off, holiday) is ใใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใค - here ๆ—ฅ is read ใ˜ใค, not ใซใก. ใใ‚…ใ†ใซใก uses the more common reading of ๆ—ฅ in the wrong place, and ใใ‚…ใ˜ใค shortens the long vowel in ใใ‚…ใ†. The same ใ˜ใค reading appears in ๆœฌๆ—ฅ (ใปใ‚“ใ˜ใค, today), which you will see on shop signs and notices.

Question 9

ใ€ŒๅˆๅพŒใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ”ใ†ใ”
  2. ใ“ใ”
  3. ใ”ใ”

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ”ใ”

ๅˆๅพŒ (afternoon, p.m.) is ใ”ใ”: two short ใ” sounds. ใ”ใ†ใ” adds a long vowel that is not there, and ใ“ใ” loses the voicing on the first sound. Its partner is ๅˆๅ‰ (ใ”ใœใ‚“), morning or a.m. Both appear on every timetable and shift chart.

Question 10

  1. ๅˆ‡ใฃใฆ
  2. ็€ใฆ
  3. ๅฃฒใฃใฆ

Answer: 2 โ€” ็€ใฆ

You put on (็€ใ‚‹, ใใ‚‹) clothes: ๆœใ‚’็€ใฆ. ๅˆ‡ใฃใฆ (from ๅˆ‡ใ‚‹, ใใ‚‹, to cut) sounds almost the same, which is the trap, and ๅฃฒใฃใฆ (ใ†ใฃใฆ, selling) makes no sense before working. Clothes for your upper body are ็€ใ‚‹; trousers and shoes are ใฏใ.

Question 11

ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅใฏๆœ7ๆ™‚ใซใ€ใ’ใ‚“ใฐใฎๅ…ฅใ‚Šๅฃใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  2. ๆญขใพใฃใฆ
  3. ๅง‹ใพใฃใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ้›†ใพใฃใฆ

People gather (้›†ใพใ‚‹, ใ‚ใคใพใ‚‹) at the site entrance (ๅ…ฅใ‚Šๅฃ, ใ„ใ‚Šใใก) at 7. ๆญขใพใฃใฆ (ใจใพใฃใฆ, stop) and ๅง‹ใพใฃใฆ (ใฏใ˜ใพใฃใฆ, begin) are intransitive verbs with the same ending, but neither is something you are asked to do at a place. ้›†ใพใ‚‹ (people or things gather) and ้›†ใ‚ใ‚‹ (you collect something) are an intransitive/transitive pair.

Question 12

  1. ๅฎ‰ใ„
  2. ๅฐ‘ใชใ„
  3. ๅคšใ„

Answer: 3 โ€” ๅคšใ„

Cleaning takes a long time because the building has many windows: ๅคšใ„ (ใŠใŠใ„). ๅฐ‘ใชใ„ (ใ™ใใชใ„, few) gives the opposite reason, and ๅฎ‰ใ„ (ใ‚„ใ™ใ„, cheap) has nothing to do with how long cleaning takes. ๅคšใ„ (ใŠใŠใ„, many) and ๅฐ‘ใชใ„ (ใ™ใใชใ„, few) describe amounts, not size - for size it is ๅคงใใ„ and ๅฐใ•ใ„.

The helmet is too big, so B offers to swap it for a smaller one: ใ€œใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹, โ€˜shall Iโ€ฆ?โ€™. ใ‹ใˆใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ (I have swapped before) does not answer the problem, and ใ‹ใˆใฆใฏใ„ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ (you must not swap) would not follow ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚, โ€˜well thenโ€™. ใ€œใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹ offers to do something for the other person; ใ€œใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† suggests doing it together.

Answer: 2 โ€” ใตใฃใŸใ‚‰

โ€˜If it rains, we will work indoorsโ€™ needs the condition ใ€œใŸใ‚‰: ใตใฃใŸใ‚‰. ใตใฃใฆใ‚‚ means โ€˜even if it rainsโ€™, which does not fit a change of plan caused by rain, and ใตใ‚‹ใฎใซ means โ€˜although it rainsโ€™, a complaint. ใ€œใŸใ‚‰ is the most useful conditional at A2: it covers both โ€˜ifโ€™ and โ€˜whenโ€™ something happens.

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ‹ใŸใฅใ‘ใฆใŠใใพใ™

ใใ‚Œใพใงใซ (by then) points to the future, and ใ€œใฆใŠใ means doing something in advance to get ready: ใ‹ใŸใฅใ‘ใฆใŠใใพใ™, โ€˜I will tidy up beforehandโ€™. The other two are past forms - ใ‹ใŸใฅใ‘ใฆใ—ใพใ„ใพใ—ใŸ (I have finished tidying) and ใ‹ใŸใฅใ‘ใŸใฐใ‹ใ‚Šใงใ™ (I have just tidied) - and cannot go with โ€˜by thenโ€™. ใ€œใฆใŠใใพใ™ is everyday workplace Japanese: ใ˜ใ‚…ใ‚“ใณใ—ใฆใŠใใพใ™, Iโ€™ll get it ready.

The answer to ใ‚‚ใ†ใ€œใพใ—ใŸใ‹ (โ€˜have youโ€ฆ yet?โ€™) when you have not is ใ„ใ„ใˆใ€ใพใ ใงใ™. ใ‚‚ใ†้ฃŸในใพใ—ใŸ contradicts ใ„ใ„ใˆ, and ใพใ ้ฃŸในใฆใ„ใพใ™ (I am still eating) does not fit ไปŠใ‹ใ‚‰้ฃŸในใพใ™ (I am going to eat now). ใพใ ใงใ™ is the short, complete answer - no verb needed.

  2. ้ฃŸในใŸ
  3. ้ฃŸในใ‚‹

Answer: 2 โ€” ้ฃŸในใŸ

โ€˜After doingโ€™ is the ใŸ-form + ใ‚ใจ(ใง): ้ฃŸในใŸใ‚ใจ, after eating. ้ฃŸในใ‚‹ใ‚ใจ is a common learner mistake - the dictionary form goes with ใพใˆ (้ฃŸในใ‚‹ใพใˆ), not ใ‚ใจ - and ้ฃŸในใฆใ‚ใจ is not grammatical. Remember the pair: ใ€œใ‚‹ใพใˆใซ (before doing) and ใ€œใŸใ‚ใจใง (after doing).

  2. ใฒใ„ใฆใ‚‚
  3. ใฒใ„ใฆ

The ใฆ-form links a cause to its result: ใ‹ใœใ‚’ใฒใ„ใฆใ€ใญใคใŒๅ‡บใŸ, โ€˜I caught a cold and got a feverโ€™. ใฒใใจ (whenever I catch a cold) is a general rule, not a past event, and ใฒใ„ใฆใ‚‚ (even though I caught a cold) gives the wrong meaning. Japanese often gives a reason with the ใฆ-form where English would use โ€˜and soโ€™.

  2. 2,500ๅ††
  3. 3,000ๅ††

Answer: 2 โ€” 2,500ๅ††

The monthly plan is normally 3,000ๅ††, but people working at a company in the city (ๅธ‚ๅ†…, ใ—ใชใ„) pay 2,500ๅ††. Ali works at a factory (ๅทฅๅ ด, ใ“ใ†ใ˜ใ‚‡ใ†) in the city, so he gets the lower price. 1,500ๅ†† is the weekly plan. ๅธ‚ๅ†… (ใ—ใชใ„) means โ€˜within the cityโ€™. Discounts for people who live or work ๅธ‚ๅ†… are common.

  3. 1ใ‹ๆœˆใƒ—ใƒฉใƒณ

Answer: 1 โ€” 1ๆ—ฅใƒ—ใƒฉใƒณ

Four days on the daily plan is 300 ร— 4 = 1,200ๅ††, which is cheaper than the weekly plan at 1,500ๅ†† and far cheaper than the monthly one. At five days the two plans cost the same (1,500ๅ††), and the weekly plan only becomes cheaper from six days on. Price-list questions often need one small sum. Do it on your scrap paper rather than guessing from the numbers.

What to do with your score

Count your score, but spend more time on where the marks went than on the total. Mark every question you guessed as well as every one you got wrong, then work through them the way reviewing a mock test sets out. The real exam reports on a 10-250 scale, and how JFT-Basic scaled scoring works explains why a mock total out of 48 does not convert neatly onto it.

Once your mistakes are sorted, sit Mock Exam 6 under the same conditions, and keep its answer guide closed until you have finished.

What to do with your mistakes

  1. Note which section cost you the most points โ€” the accuracy calculator shows it at a glance โ€” then read the guide for it: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening, Reading.
  2. Drill it with the free 24-question practice test, which explains every answer as you go.
  3. Only then sit the next full set โ€” a few days later, under real conditions. How to review a mock test goes into more detail.
