This is the answer guide to Mock Exam 3. If you have not sat it yet, stop here and sit it first, under real conditions: one 60-minute clock, headphones, no dictionary. The explanations below give every answer away, and a mock you have already seen the answers to measures nothing.

This set leans towards nursing care. About half the questions take place in a care home - residents, meals, baths, the duty board, shift handovers, families visiting - and several test the polite speech you are expected to use with elders. The rest is ordinary daily life and work. If you want more practice after this one, here are all ten mock exams.

Question 1

  1. ใ‹ใ„ใ”
  2. ใใ†ใ˜
  3. ใ†ใ‚“ใฆใ‚“

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‹ใ„ใ”

The description is a job that helps elderly or frail people (ใŠๅนดใ‚ˆใ‚Š, ใŠใจใ—ใ‚ˆใ‚Š) with meals, baths and the toilet, which is ใ‹ใ„ใ” (ไป‹่ญท, nursing care). ใใ†ใ˜ is cleaning and ใ†ใ‚“ใฆใ‚“ is driving: both are jobs, but neither is about helping a person with daily life. Care homes and job adverts write it in kanji as ไป‹่ญท, and the job title is ไป‹่ญทๅฃซ (ใ‹ใ„ใ”ใ—), care worker.

Question 2

ใ‹ใœใ‚’ใฒใ„ใŸใจใใ€ใ“ใ‚Œใ‚’ไฝฟใฃใฆใ€ใญใคใŒไฝ•ๅบฆใ‚ใ‚‹ใ‹ใฏใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚

  1. ใฏใ‹ใ‚Š
  2. ใจใ‘ใ„
  3. ใŸใ„ใŠใ‚“ใ‘ใ„

Answer: 3 โ€” ใŸใ„ใŠใ‚“ใ‘ใ„

You use it to measure (ใฏใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ™) how many degrees of fever (ใญใค) you have, so it is a ใŸใ„ใŠใ‚“ใ‘ใ„ (ไฝ“ๆธฉ่จˆ, thermometer). A ใฏใ‹ใ‚Š is a weighing scale - it also measures, but weight, not temperature. A ใจใ‘ใ„ is a clock or watch. Notice how much the word itself tells you: ไฝ“ๆธฉ (ใŸใ„ใŠใ‚“) is body temperature and ่จˆ (ใ‘ใ„) is a meter.

Question 3

  1. ใคใˆ
  2. ่ปŠใ„ใ™
  3. ใƒ™ใƒƒใƒ‰

Answer: 2 โ€” ่ปŠใ„ใ™

The key phrase is ใ™ใ‚ใฃใŸใพใพใงๅ‹•ใ, โ€˜move while staying seatedโ€™, which describes a ่ปŠใ„ใ™ (ใใ‚‹ใพใ„ใ™, wheelchair). A ใคใˆ (walking stick) is also for people with weak legs, but you walk with it, you do not sit. A ใƒ™ใƒƒใƒ‰ is for lying down, not for moving around. In the description, ๏ฝžใŸใพใพใง means โ€œstaying in that stateโ€, so ใ™ใ‚ใฃใŸใพใพใง is โ€œwhile still sittingโ€.

Question 4

้›จใง้“ใŒใ™ในใ‚Šใ‚„ใ™ใ„ใงใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ๆญฉใ„ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใ™ใใซ
  2. ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š
  3. ใŸใใ•ใ‚“

Answer: 2 โ€” ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š

The road is slippery (ใ™ในใ‚Šใ‚„ใ™ใ„) because of the rain, so the sensible advice is to walk ใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Š, slowly. ใ™ใใซ (straight away) and ใŸใใ•ใ‚“ (a lot) fit the grammar but not the meaning: neither has anything to do with being careful on a slippery road. The ๏ฝžใ‚„ใ™ใ„ ending in ใ™ในใ‚Šใ‚„ใ™ใ„ means โ€œeasy to โ€ฆโ€ or โ€œlikely to โ€ฆโ€, and it is worth knowing on its own.

Question 5

ใŠใตใ‚ใฎใŠใ‚†ใŒ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใจใ€ใŠๅนดใ‚ˆใ‚Šใฏใ‚„ใ‘ใฉใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ๆฐ—ใ‚’ใคใ‘ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใ‚ใคใ™ใŽใ‚‹
  2. ใคใ‚ใŸใ™ใŽใ‚‹
  3. ใ™ใใชใ™ใŽใ‚‹

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‚ใคใ™ใŽใ‚‹

ใ‚„ใ‘ใฉ is a burn, and only water that is too hot (ใ‚ใคใ™ใŽใ‚‹) burns you. ใคใ‚ใŸใ™ใŽใ‚‹ (too cold) and ใ™ใใชใ™ใŽใ‚‹ (too little) are real problems with a bath, but they cannot cause a burn. Adjective stem + ใ™ใŽใ‚‹ means โ€˜too โ€ฆโ€™. The ใจ in ใ‚ใคใ™ใŽใ‚‹ใจ means โ€œif / whenโ€: when the water is too hot, a burn follows.

Question 6

ๅˆฉ็”จ่€…ใ•ใ‚“ใฎๅฎถๆ—ใŒๆฅใŸใ‚‰ใ€ใพใš๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใงๅๅ‰ใ‚’ๆ›ธใ„ใฆใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใฃใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ใƒˆใ‚คใƒฌ
  2. ใ—ใ‚‡ใใฉใ†
  3. ใ†ใ‘ใคใ‘

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ†ใ‘ใคใ‘

Visitors write their name at the ใ†ใ‘ใคใ‘ (ๅ—ไป˜, reception desk), so that is the place that fits. ใƒˆใ‚คใƒฌ (toilet) and ใ—ใ‚‡ใใฉใ† (dining room) are places in a care home, but nobody signs in there. ๅˆฉ็”จ่€…ใ•ใ‚“ (ใ‚Šใ‚ˆใ†ใ—ใ‚ƒใ•ใ‚“) is the word care homes use for their residents. The ๏ฝžใฆใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใฃใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ pattern means โ€œplease have them do itโ€, here โ€œplease ask them to write their nameโ€.

Question 7

ใ€Œ้ฃŸไบ‹ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ—
  2. ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ˜
  3. ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ˜

Answer: 3 โ€” ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ˜

้ฃŸไบ‹ (a meal) is read ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ˜, with a voiced ใ˜. ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ— drops the voicing, and ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ˜ has a long ใ—ใ‚‡ใ† instead of the short ใ—ใ‚‡ใ - both are near misses. You will see ้ฃŸไบ‹ everywhere in a care home: ้ฃŸไบ‹ใฎๆ™‚้–“, ้ฃŸไบ‹ใฎๆ‰‹ไผใ„. The same ้ฃŸ appears in ้ฃŸๅ ‚ (ใ—ใ‚‡ใใฉใ†, dining room) and ้ฃŸๅ™จ (ใ—ใ‚‡ใฃใ, dishes), both of which come up again in this set.

Question 8

ใ€ŒๆฏŽๆœใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใพใ„ใกใ‚‡ใ†
  2. ใพใ„ใ‚ใ•
  3. ใพใˆใ‚ใ•

Answer: 2 โ€” ใพใ„ใ‚ใ•

ๆฏŽๆœ (every morning) is ใพใ„ใ‚ใ•: ๆฏŽ is ใพใ„ and ๆœ keeps its native reading ใ‚ใ•. ใพใ„ใกใ‚‡ใ† uses the on-reading ใกใ‚‡ใ†, which ๆœ only takes in other words such as ๆœ้ฃŸ (ใกใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใ‚‡ใ). ใพใˆใ‚ใ• confuses ๆฏŽ (ใพใ„) with ๅ‰ (ใพใˆ). ๆฏŽ works the same way in ๆฏŽๆ—ฅ (ใพใ„ใซใก), ๆฏŽ้€ฑ (ใพใ„ใ—ใ‚…ใ†) and ๆฏŽๆ™ฉ (ใพใ„ใฐใ‚“).

Question 9

ใ€Œๅฎถๆ—ใ€ใฏใ€ใฒใ‚‰ใŒใชใงใฉใ†ๆ›ธใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚

  1. ใ‹ใžใ
  2. ใ‹ใใ
  3. ใŒใžใ

Answer: 1 โ€” ใ‹ใžใ

ๅฎถๆ— (family) is ใ‹ใžใ, with the voiced ใž in the middle and an unvoiced ใ‹ at the start. ใ‹ใใ loses the voicing on ใž, and ใŒใžใ adds voicing to ใ‹. Both are classic near-miss traps. ๆ— is always ใžใ, so learn ใ‹ใžใ as a sound pattern rather than syllable by syllable.

Question 10

ๆœจๆ‘ใ•ใ‚“ใฏ่€ณใŒใ‚ˆใ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใฎใงใ€ๅคงใใ„ๅฃฐใง่ฉฑใ—ใฆใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ่žใ“ใˆใชใ„
  2. ่ฆ‹ใˆใชใ„
  3. ่จ€ใˆใชใ„

Answer: 1 โ€” ่žใ“ใˆใชใ„

The sentence is about the ears (่€ณ, ใฟใฟ) and speaking in a loud voice (ๅคงใใ„ๅฃฐ, ใŠใŠใใ„ใ“ใˆ), so Mr Kimura cannot hear well: ่žใ“ใˆใชใ„ (ใใ“ใˆใชใ„). ่ฆ‹ใˆใชใ„ (cannot see) belongs with eyes, and ่จ€ใˆใชใ„ (cannot say) would not explain why you need to speak loudly. ่žใ“ใˆใ‚‹ (to be audible) is not the same as ่žใ (to listen): ่žใ“ใˆใชใ„ is about the ears, not about paying attention.

Question 11

ๅˆฉ็”จ่€…ใ•ใ‚“ใฎๆฏŽๆ—ฅใฎใŸใ„ใŠใ‚“ใฏใ€ใ“ใฎใƒŽใƒผใƒˆใซ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚

  1. ่ชญใ‚“ใง
  2. ่žใ„ใฆ
  3. ๆ›ธใ„ใฆ

Answer: 3 โ€” ๆ›ธใ„ใฆ

You write (ๆ›ธใ, ใ‹ใ) the temperature in the notebook: ใƒŽใƒผใƒˆใซๆ›ธใ. ่ชญใ‚“ใง (ใ‚ˆใ‚“ใง, read) and ่žใ„ใฆ (ใใ„ใฆ, listen or ask) do not take ใƒŽใƒผใƒˆใซ and make no sense for recording a temperature. Keeping daily records like this is part of every care-home shift, so ใƒŽใƒผใƒˆใซๆ›ธใ is worth knowing as a phrase.

Question 12

ๅคœใ€ใจใชใ‚Šใฎ้ƒจๅฑ‹ใฎ้›ปๆฐ—ใŒ๏ผˆใ€€๏ผ‰ใ„ใŸใฎใงใ€ใ‚‚ใ†ใญใฆใ„ใ‚‹ใจๆ€ใ„ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

  1. ๆถˆใ—ใฆ
  2. ๆถˆใˆใฆ
  3. ้–‹ใ„ใฆ

Answer: 2 โ€” ๆถˆใˆใฆ

The particle ใŒ marks ้›ปๆฐ— as the subject, so you need the intransitive verb: ้›ปๆฐ—ใŒๆถˆใˆใฆใ„ใ‚‹ (ใใˆใฆใ„ใ‚‹), โ€˜the light is offโ€™. ๆถˆใ—ใฆ (ใ‘ใ—ใฆ) is the transitive verb and needs ใ‚’ (้›ปๆฐ—ใ‚’ๆถˆใ™). ้–‹ใ„ใฆ (ใ‚ใ„ใฆ) is for doors and windows, not lights. Learn the pairs together: ๆถˆใ™ / ๆถˆใˆใ‚‹, ้–‹ใ‘ใ‚‹ / ้–‹ใ, ใคใ‘ใ‚‹ / ใคใ. The particle (ใ‚’ or ใŒ) tells you which one you need.

  2. ้ฃŸในใฆใ„ใพใ™
  3. ้ฃŸในใพใ›ใ‚“

Answer: 2 โ€” ้ฃŸในใฆใ„ใพใ™

ใพใ  + ใฆใ„ใ‚‹ means โ€˜still doingโ€™: Nguyen is still eating and needs about five more minutes, so ้ฃŸในใฆใ„ใพใ™. ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใŸ would mean he has finished, which contradicts ใ„ใ„ใˆ. ใพใ ้ฃŸในใพใ›ใ‚“ means โ€˜I wonโ€™t eat yetโ€™, which does not fit ใ‚ใจไบ”ๅˆ†ใใ‚‰ใ„ใงใ™. The pattern ใพใ ๏ฝžใฆใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ (โ€œhavenโ€™t โ€ฆ yetโ€) is the other half of the same idea, and it is just as common.

  3. ๅผทใใ—ใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™

Answer: 2 โ€” ๅผทใใ—ใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™

B says the temperature is just right (ใกใ‚‡ใ†ใฉใ„ใ„), so there is no need to turn it up: ๏ฝžใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™, โ€˜you donโ€™t have toโ€™. ๅผทใใ—ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (โ€˜letโ€™s turn it upโ€™) contradicts ใ„ใ„ใˆ. ๅผทใใ—ใŸใ“ใจใŒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ (โ€˜I have turned it up beforeโ€™) is about past experience and does not answer the offer. The opposite of ๏ฝžใชใใฆใ‚‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ is ๏ฝžใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“, โ€œmustโ€.

  1. ็ต‚ใ‚ใฃใŸ
  2. ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚‹
  3. ็ต‚ใ‚ใฃใฆ

Answer: 1 โ€” ็ต‚ใ‚ใฃใŸ

ๅพŒใง (ใ‚ใจใง, after) always follows the ใŸ-form of a verb: ้ฃŸไบ‹ใŒ็ต‚ใ‚ใฃใŸๅพŒใง, โ€˜after the meal has finishedโ€™. The dictionary form ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚‹ goes with ๅ‰ใซ (before), not ๅพŒใง, and the ใฆ-form ็ต‚ใ‚ใฃใฆ cannot connect to ๅพŒใง at all. Remember the pair: dictionary form + ๅ‰ใซ, ใŸ-form + ๅพŒใง.

Answer: 3 โ€” ไฝฟใฃใฆใฟใ‚‹ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™

B has not tried it yet (ใพใ ใงใ™) and talks about the next day off (ไปŠๅบฆใฎไผ‘ใฟ), so a future plan fits: ๏ฝžใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™, โ€˜I intend toโ€™. ไฝฟใฃใฆใฟใพใ—ใŸ is past and contradicts ใพใ . ไฝฟใฃใฆใฏใ„ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ (โ€˜you must not use itโ€™) makes no sense for your own new phone. ๏ฝžใฆใฟใ‚‹ means โ€œtry doingโ€, so ไฝฟใฃใฆใฟใ‚‹ is โ€œtry usingโ€. It combines with ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Š, ใŸใ„ and ใพใ—ใŸ like any verb.

  1. ใชใ‚‰
  2. ใ—ใ‹

Answer: 1 โ€” ใชใ‚‰

ใชใ‚‰ picks out the case where something is true: โ€˜with a spoon, she can eatโ€™. ใ—ใ‹ (โ€˜onlyโ€™) must be followed by a negative verb (ใ‚นใƒ—ใƒผใƒณใ—ใ‹ไฝฟใˆใพใ›ใ‚“), but here the verb is positive ้ฃŸในใ‚‰ใ‚Œใพใ™. ใ‚ˆใ‚Š is for comparisons and needs something to compare with. At this level, ใชใ‚‰ is best learned as โ€œif it is โ€ฆ / as for โ€ฆโ€, picking out one case from several.

Woman: For tomorrowโ€™s cherry-blossom viewing, shall we take the bus from the station?
Man: The bus will be crowded. Why donโ€™t we walk?
Woman: But walking takes about thirty minutes.
Man: Then how about bikes? We can borrow the dormitoryโ€™s bikes.

Three ways are suggested in turn: the bus (too crowded), walking (thirty minutes, too long) and finally bicycles, which the woman accepts with ใใ†ใ—ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†. Woman: Excuse me, Iโ€™m Hana Kimuraโ€™s family. Iโ€™ve come to see my mother.
Man: Mrs Kimura. She is usually in the second-floor dining room at this time, but today is her rehab day, so she is in the rehab room on the third floor.
Woman: Then Iโ€™ll go to the third floor.
Man: Oh, wait a moment. Rehab finishes at eleven, so itโ€™s already over. Sheโ€™s back in her room now.

Two places are mentioned before the answer: the dining room is where she usually is, and the rehab room is where she was this morning. So dinner is Nguyen and Lin. Always read the โ€ป notes on a table - they often change the answer. Noun + ใฎใ‹ใ‚ใ‚Šใซ means โ€œinstead ofโ€ that person or thing, and it turns up constantly on duty boards and shift notices.

What to do with your score

Count your correct answers in each of the four sections before you look at the total. The section that is furthest behind is where your next fortnight of study should go, and the questions you got right by guessing deserve the same attention as the ones you got wrong. How to review a mock test walks through that process step by step.

Remember that a raw count out of 48 is not the same as the official score out of 250 - see how JFT-Basic scaled scoring works. When you are ready, sit Mock Exam 4 under the same conditions, then check it against the Mock Exam 4 answer guide.

What to do with your mistakes

  1. Note which section cost you the most points โ€” the accuracy calculator shows it at a glance โ€” then read the guide for it: Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening, Reading.
  2. Drill it with the free 24-question practice test, which explains every answer as you go.
  3. Only then sit the next full set โ€” a few days later, under real conditions. How to review a mock test goes into more detail.
